9/10 times the facebook page is linked to a hotmail account which is really easy to get into, gMail accounts can be a little tougher with two security questions and an automatic 2nd email account already nominated.

So the problem's actually with email accounts being easy to access, not Facebook? If someone was able to access my email account, I'd be a lot more worried about actual harm that could be done (Paypal accounts, details saved with online retailers, actual personal stuff etc) than what could be accessed from my Facebook account.

Hotmail accounts are easy to get into if the user has made them easy to get into, same as Gmail. And there's no way to specify a different 'alternate' email address for either unless you have the password already, you would need the answer to the 'secret question' to reset the password

You dont need the password as youve already answered the security question for eg. Name of pet, childhood friend, usually preset questions which the answers are easily obtained from... wait for it - Facebook.

Once youve gotten past that bit there are no more security checks, you can nominate whatever email account you want details sent to.

Most people choose weak passwords for their internet travels.
And using the same password for many things makes it easier for a hacker.

Do you use one of these?

OP, if you're worred about Facebook, then stay away from Google. It knows more about you then you do.

Very few of the answers to preset questions would be on Facebook. It's rarely the current pet that's asked, it's first pet. "Childhood friend"? I suppose if you had a few hours and printed out a list of their friends, you might get it, assuming the friend is on Facebook, they haven't used a nickname and they've only used their first name as the answer. And of course all these attacks will be quickly spotted by any regular user, since their password won't work. Regardless, what you said was:

Which is not even close to being true. You can do it if, if they:
    • Have their Facebook page details viewable
    • Their email address is viewable
    • Their email is a hotmail address
    • They have a secret question
    • You know the answer to their secret question
    • They don't log in shortly after you and get their password reset by the Hotmail service staff
I suppose it might be true for about 5% of Facebook accounts. Certainly not "ANY". And the ones that are, are the fault of the user, not Facebook

Why's it such a bit deal?

Facebook is a social site, people put in personal details, this is veiwable by others... what exactly don't people get about social networking?

Don't want people knowing? Block your page!
Wanna be sure there is no way anyone can possibly find it out? Don't write it there!

It only takes a name and email address to set up, anything else you add you are entering it for people to see.

As for the OP, whats the big deal about comments not being safe? Comments are public, everyone knows this, some idiots discuss stupid things in public to get attention.... they are idiots, ignore them, again, if you don't want people to know, don't write it on the internet...

... Is this actually all that hard for people to grasp? The way people talk you'd swear a facebook account left you open to your bank accounts being raided any minute.

Heh. Hacking Facebook accounts is far too easy.
Men will usually use their favourite football team. Woman will usually use a pet's name. If they have kids, then it will be the first born's name, that with a 1, or a combination of two or three children's names in full or just the first three letters or three or more kids.

You don't even have to go the route of getting into their e-mail account (which will usually have the same password.

Well I wouldn't be discussing I knocked off the night before or anything...
    Cheers. Appreciate that.

    Sounds complicated

anything that involves online interaction is safe so long as you have common sense. it's down to you, not anybody or anything else.
