Looking for some tips and tricks if you guys have any. I've installed a few apps already that I used on other platforms and they're working great.

Any recommendations for twitter apps or do you just use the built in twitter app (Mango).

    Thanks all.

My favorite twitter app i used is MehDoh

But i dont use it alot. Integrated twitter client is the usual way

I'm thinking about get the HTC Titan but I have some worries maybe someone could help me out with?

    - Is there really no 3g data counter? Did some searching and apparently there are no APIs for developers to access network data.

    - Is there any app to quickly turn off auto rotate? I've read there is a registry hack but sounds very inconvenient for quick switching.

    - How quick is it to turn on/off 3g/wifi? Do you have to delve into menus or can you get some sort of live tile app for the homescreen?

    - Like above how easy it to change screen brightness/volume on the fly? Going into something like "settings/sound/ring volume" would be very annoying

    - Does not having flash affect the Internet experience much?

    I'll start from the bottom.

Not having flash doesn't bother me with HTML5 you can watch (in my case all the news website) videos.

Depends what you visit the most. I could try it out does it work

Ring volume goes down quick with volume button. There's also a quick vibrate button once you press the volume key.

For brightness you have to go to settings. Though im rocking my Omnia at full brightness and get a day out of it easy.
for data and WiFi you can pin live tiles to the homescreen to access the menu with one click.

Nothing for auto rotation. WP7 is mainly portrait orientated to it doesn't affect it that much as it does on android I think.

    no data counter either.

Myself and the other windows phone user here in Cork have noticed that neither of us are getting vodafone text alerts to say we have a voice mail.

Ha! Feels like that sometimes; I'm a Cork based HD7 owner and in the last year I have not met a single other WP7 owner. Although in fairness my circle of friends wouldn't exactly be very techy (no iPhone owners, even).
    stevenmu wrote: »
Yes! I've been getting the exact same thing with an Omnia 7 on Vodafone too. I've noticed though if I look at the last voicemail text recieved it does seem to have been updated with the correct number of voicemails, so I think Vodafone is sending the text but WP7 is overwriting the last one and not flagging it as new for some reason. I do have 171 configured as my voicemail number so I'm going to try unsetting that and see if it makes a difference.

    edit: nope, didn't work.

edit2: I think it started happening for me when I upgraded to mango, it definitely did work previously.

edit3: According to Vodafone NZ it's a known issue that MS will fix. They also seem to have the possibility of enabling a voicemail icon notification, not sure if that's available here.

Yeah this happens with O2 on my HD7 - it started with the Mango update.

What happens is that Irish mobile phone providers don't use the "official" voicemail-notification method of a voicemail icon on phones (even the old Nokia 3210 had this feature); instead, they send a text message. And i'm not sure how they do it, but say if you received a voicemail text notification an hour ago, and you get another voicemail 10 minutes later, the same text message is updated from "1 new message" to "2 new messages". Problem is, when there is already a New Voicemail text on your Windows Phone 7.5, when the text is updated to notify of additional voicemails, you don't get a notification. Before Mango, this message updating would prompt a new text message alert.

So, long story short, every time I get a voicemail alert I delete the message immediately so that if I get another voicemail later I will get my alert. Otherwise, it updates silently.

Seems like the obvious fix for this would be just to implement visual voicemail for smartphone users. Or properly implement voicemail flags. But god forbid they would spend money on improving service for Irish phone users ;-)
As in a text message altert?

Whenever i get a voicemail it comes up as a notification on the "Phone" tile.

Once you ring up your voicemail and hear the voicemail it goes away.

    Im on Meteor

Yeah Meteor does it right; Vodafone and O2 (and Three?) do it the old text-message-alert way. Nonsense.

Just got my first windowsphone the other day, and it seems they still haven't updated bing with hearby information or see+do for Ireland :( anybody know if they're updating this service. It would be nice to have.
    I'm seeing the same thing.

I suspect it's because bing doesn't hold much data for Ireland; we should be seeing a "local" tab in the bing results that would should us addresses, businesses, restaurants etc. Because doesn't have ANY ROI info in this regard, it looks like the "local" tab is not being shown at all, which means we can't search the map!

I'm assuming Google (or aome other developer) will come to the rescue with this one, and either build a similar app based on bing maps with better functionality, or just do a Google maps version altogether (which would be good, since Google Maps DOES have loads of ROI maps data, and street view too of course).

The price of being an early adopter :D

Does anyone know if I bought the new Nokia Lumia 800 Sim Free up north when they are released on the 16th Nov will it work ok with a microsim from the Republic (e.g.. Vodafone Ireland)?

Not willing to wait until Jan or Feb next year for Ireland launch, i want it now!! I see that they are on preorder on Expansys now for €709.99, but i'll be dammed if i pay that sort of money for one.

Already own an O2 UK sim free HD7 at the minute (which i purchased 2nd hand) and it works fine with VF Ireland SIM. Just wondering if the term SIM free also means carrier unlocked if you waked into say carphone warehouse up north and bought one for example?

    Yes, sim free means unlocked.

Great, thanks for that. Just wanted to be 100% sure! Will be taking the trip up north for one on the 16th then so! :D

    Thanks again.

Sweet jesus that's quite the price, you should be able to find one in the next month for closer to €480 sim free, I wouldn't trust expansys.

You can cut your normal sized sim down to micro sim size by following tutorials on the internet (dodgy) or getting a specialised cutter like this (better), which also provides an adapter for fitting back into normal sized sim holders in future. Probably the way to go.

The only thing that may not work on a new Nokia brought heree from another country is MMS, as the settings for this are different for every country and provider and it is not usually possible to manually enter the settings for your provider; the phone manufacturer essentially has to provide a way of setting the correct settings with a built in app (like Connection Setup on HTC Windows Phones). Nokia may only have settings for network providers in the countries they are laucnhing the Lumia range in right now. But then again, who's using MMS these days??

The one big thing that concerns me about the new Lumia range is the lack of Internet Connection Sharing (wiFi hospot / tethering). I only heard about this in the last few days, and although Nokia are saying that they will update the phones later to support ICS, this could be a while coming. I find myself in a situation these days where ICS is necessary for my work, and it is a serious consideration in my decision making process for a new phone.

Yeah, Expansys are something else with the prices thats for sure!

You are correct about the MMS as it has not worked on the current HD7 which came from the UK originally, but like you said who uses it nowadays anyway. Would not be a worry for me.

Yeah, i have read that the tethering is coming at some point, however i use a rooted HTC Desire with CM7 for that sort of thing anyway so its not really a problem either for me at the moment.

    Thanks for the info.....:)

Would this also allow the removal of a carrier sim-lock?

Don't think so. It only unlocks the developer attributes of the device, like sideloading apps.

There's something fishy going on over at Expansys; the UK website has the Lumia 800 16GB listed at £440 (~ €512) whereas the IE site has it listed at €710. Obviously that's not right, since other phones are fairly well matched between the UK and Ireland; the new Samsung W is listed at £330 (~ €384) on the UK site, whereas the same phone is €380 on the IE site. If they correct it and it ends up costing something in the region of €500 then I think it could make a marvellous little Christmas present ;-) Unless anybody else knows a good source of well-priced sim free phones on the interweb?

You can set the apn for internet via mobile network settings. I did it today and it worked. Had a customer who couldn't send mms. I tried sending one of my phone for the first time in years and it didn't work. So I got the apn settings of boards FAQ. Put them in and it worked :)

Internet tethering will come with Lumia with a future update. Apparently its something to do with the new FCC regulations

Guy, in looking for a good Twitter app. Normally I just use the mobile site in IE, but its getting irritating.
Twitter in the People Hub is too basic, no follow/unfollow etc.
The official Twitter app rarely loads properly. It usually says something like "rate limit exceeded".

All I'm looking for is a quick app, that will let me browse/add/remove the people I follow, and upload photos.

    Looking forward to some advice.

In other news, I flashed my Optimus with the VF Ireland ROM (After previously having the Open Europe one), and instantly got the WiFi tethering update. Its awesome :D

Funny enough I used to use a variety of Twitter apps before Mango for my basic Twitter needs (whichever one was fastest, essentially), but haven't bothered with the apps now that Twitter is in the people hub.

Anyway, you can try Motweets, Birdsong, Beezz, Mehdoh, Rowi. Most apps have either a free ad-supported version or a trial. Personally I quite liked Birdsong; live tiles, clean design, pretty quick.

Still waiting for tethering update for my O2 HD7 (I am *not* flashing a ROM; I promised myself last year I wouldn't start doing that with WP7. I still have all my texts from the first day I got the phone!).

Was doing some calling around some UK providers today in relation the new Nokia Lumia 800. I was thinking about pre-ordering one from Expansys UK, so called to confirm that the order through the UK site would be ok from Ireland. Price looked ok, works out around 530 EUR incl postage from the UK site, its 724.99 EUR from Irish site!

The lady on the phone confirmed that all should be ok if i wanted to preorder today, before i did so i then asked about when they thought the SIM FREE version would be in stock (i assumed that they would have in stock next week or week after, as the launch date was quoted as 16th Nov), it turns out the SIM FREE versions will not be availible until early 2012  She reckons that the providers will have the handsets first, which will obviously be locked to the providers, we are not getting them in Ireland for now as we all know, so we are out of the loop completely by the look of things.

Also called clove.co.uk and they did not have a clue when they would be in stock SIM FREE, but would have to assume that its the same story as Expansys.co.uk, early 2012!

Also I seen a rumor circulating recently that Three in the UK were going to be doing them SIM FREE for £399 STG. Called them at some stores up the north and called the UK call centre directly and they know nothing about this, turns out this will be a carrier locked PAYG model only, not SIM FREE.

So i guess the question is where can you lay your hands on one of these phones next week?? Options look slim at getting one before Xmas at the moment, i was going to get one up north but that looks out also :(

Anyone got any other ideas or heard anything else??

UPDATE: Looks likes the contract only story has been confirmed by the Clove blog this evening http://blog.clove.co.uk/2011/11/08/nokia-lumia-800no-uk-sim-free-stock-until-january/

The only issue i have is that every now and again it loses connection to O2 and i have to turn the phone off and on. (emergency calls only)

phonehouse.fr are selling the Lumia 800 "without subscription" for €499, but I'm not sure if this means you'd be buying a handset locked to a French carrier. You're taking the risk that you might not be able to unlock it for use with an Irish SIM. And phonehouse.fr may not even deliver to Ireland anyway.

Unfortunately it looks like we'll be waiting till after Christmas for a Nokia with WP7. My father in law works in Germany and is renewing his T-Mobile contract, he seems pretty interested in the Nokia 800. I might get the chance to try it out if he goes for it (I can also have a sneaky test to make sure there is definitely a SIM lock on it :D )

I have the "share" and "share with facebook" options with all my videos in the Camera Roll; this is on the HD7 with Mango. Do you only have the "Delete" option in the application bar?

Yeah i had a look at that earlier this afternoon, went to checkout, seem to deliver to France only, no option to select country at all on the checkout page.

    Its the pits :(

If anyone has any ideas where we can pick one up this side of Christmas then please let us know.

    Cheers.

I seen that earlier on my travels, however if you order from Amazon.de will they deliver to Ireland i wonder? Thing i am wondering is even though they are advertised for pre-order all over the web no-one might have stock until Jan 2012 in any case by the sounds of what is coming out this evening from Nokia.

I see them on CPW in the uk now sim free for £469.95, question is when will they have them.

A lot of posters on here bought the LG Optimus 7 from Amazon.de and they did post to Ireland so I'm guessing that they still do but best to check that out first just incase.

I sent an email off to Nokia asking them if they could let me know where it will be available to buy sim free and get before christmas. They may not reply with good news, but who knows :)

Well thats promising about those orders for the LG's. Might bang them an email tomorrow in Amazon to see what they say about it. Will post any news.

I sent a wee tweet to Nokia earlier on, heard nothing since, lets keep the fingers crossed.

Doing some reading around and the issue around the SIM free versions only seems to apply to the UK market which is strange, lets hope it bodes well for getting one out of europe in the next week or 2! :D

I see that those lucky French folk are getting theirs before the weeks out!

Hmm, can anyone see Spotify in the Marketplace?

I once again seem to be stuck in the awkward middleground whereby I have an Irish Live/Zune account but am living in the UK so because Spotify isn't officially out in Ireland I may not be able to get it from the Irish or UK store. :(

Just did run through of the Amazon.de ordering process and it would have let me order one if I'd hit the confirm button.... It would have said no we can't deliver to this address after the 3-4 page (like the UK site does) but it didn't!
    There's hope yet! :)

I have the "share" and "share with facebook" options with all my videos in the Camera Roll; this is on the HD7 with Mango. Do you only have the "Delete" option in the application bar?

Yeah, found that share link in that location - cheers.
    It's defo a flaw in Mango cos;
You go to the music & video tile, highlight the video but you cannot share the video from here.
Yet you go to the pictures tile, camera roll, and you can share from here....
    A little silly.

    Dear Samsung Owners

You should be happy to know Samsung is once again screwing us over the arse by not supporting "older" hardware...

Theres a "new" app in Samsung marketplace which is called wireless manager.

    Description:

Wireless manager allows Samsung Windows Phone users to easily apply settings for call forwarding, call waiting and APN.

Tried to install it and it says the app is not supported on your device.

Now i love Samsung Hardware. Best screen in its class, nice audio quality, good battery life and at least one hardware button to get home. But if they keep this up my next phone will defo not be manufactured by Samsung.

Its pretty pathetic of them not support the one phone they have here when the new one is not even launched.

What is worse that their not supporting for the sake of not supporting it. I mean DLNA is something our Omnia 7's are well capable of. Yet they don't issue driver updates to allow this or enable the app to run even without them.

That is pretty bad, especially with one of the ethos of Windows Phone 7 being that older phones won't be left behind - as was shown with the very smooth rollout of Mango to (currently almost) all phones. To leave a phone that's just a year old behind would be quite frustrating.

This, however, will be released for all Mango phones very very soon. I promise.

...It'll all look better on the phone. :o

Well its not the actually Microsoft Software letting the phones behind. But as usual Sammy being a little bitch and not supporting older hardware. Its not even old hardware. My phone is only a phone year old...

I wouldnt be half as bothered if it was a HTC phone as ive always can count on XDA devs to provide a solution. But there's winds whistling in Omnia 7 development.

I'm starting to get really annoyed here...

I got the new version of the Xbox 360 Dashboard, and I still cant connect my Windows Phone to my Xbox to play stuff off it. What the hell is going on in Microsoft HQ? My old iPhone connected to my Xbox, and my Windows Phone cant?

I think that's rather a fault on wp7 side. Not being able to go into an mp3 player mode.

Yeah, its a real disappointment. The DLNA is nice, but having to turn on my PC and have the 360 in Media Center mode means I can't play games while listening to music/podcasts.
I actually dug out my old Zune (Yes, I have a Zune) and have it constantly plugged into the 360, just for playing my music in games.

I wonder when the 360 Remote app will arrive, that will be really handy.

I think that Xbox Companion app for now is only a an actual play and pause remote for movies on Zune. Thats the image i get from the demos.

Has anyone tried using the GChat application yet? I downloaded it a few days ago and haven't had a great experience with it. Push messages either take ages to arrive or never arrive at all and sometimes it only receives some messages and not others in the same conversation. Am I the only one?

Also, still very disappointed that only FB chat is integrated with SMS and chat apps can't run in the background - huge hole in functionality for me.

Mmm integrated facebook chat can run in the background. Maybe you have an unstable connection or loose internet connectivity once in a while.

Im using facebook chat more than anything now since mango. Free messages!! HEY :) No need for any other apps

It's possible, I certainly wouldn't rule it out. I'm with Meteor in Dublin and haven't noticed any other problems. Last night was particularly bad - I was on 3G+ on Meteor and Wifi to my UPC connection so between the two of them, there's really no excuse for not receiving push messages.

Make sure battery saver isnt on either.

Ive noticed it works the best when push email is on because it always keeps the phone in sync. So your technically always connected. Not just in standby for most of the time.

I'll give that a go. I disabled push email a few weeks ago because it was chewing battery life.

I didnt notice that much of a difference. It takes away probably an hour from an average day if i have push mail on.

Really? Oh dear. I could have sworn I heard that it would let you browse the marketplace, queue downloads, and the like.

So i finally decided to remove the engineering Tmobile rom and flash back to a stock one that it came with. God the phone seems so slow without mango...Its like crawling lol. Not in a way thats its slow just the animations take longer than what im used to with mango or nodo, whenever the change came in.
