I have just completed my thesis and I have to submit it by email.

I have my cover page, abstract, acknowledgments and table of contents separate to the actual thesis as I don't want page numbers on them.

When I try to merge the two together, the numbers automatically start on the abstract which I don't want at all!

I want them starting a page after the table of contents.

any idea how I can do this?

    Remove existing page numbers
Insert a section break between your ToC and 'first page'.
Page Layout tab > Page Setup area > Breaks drop down > Next Page

In the footer of your 'first page' unselect the "Link To Previous" option (on the design tab)

Insert page numbers in the footer of your 'first page' and format them to start at 1 (and not from the previous section.

Refresh your ToC by right clicking on it and select Update Field > Entire Table.
