Whatever they have said they are going to do, where is the legislation to back it up? The advertisements are not permanent structures so do not require planning permission. They are trailers and farm equipment on private land.

Ad's differ from sculptures in that there is stuff to read on adverts. They differ from roadsigns as there is just enough information on them to keep you informed (designed specifically so). Ad's differ from Sheep and Cows because you generally don't have writing on sheep or cows which you'll try and read.

I've no real issue with trailer ads on motorways - they're too different from road signs to be a distraction, and easy to filter out.

What I do have a problem with are small ads piggybacking on signage poles, and multi-function displays advertising businesses. Case in point is the N7 between Newlands Cross and the Red Cow. Might have been cleaned up a bit now, but the signage poles had a mixture of permanent signs, temporary roadworks signs and permanent (?) ads, all roughly of the same size and prominance. This makes it very difficult to get the information you actually need. You also expect multi-function displays to give important/urgent information, not the price of a hotel room.

Why is advertising banned on the safest type of road there is, the motorway yet perfectly fine on all other roads down to city centres where you are far more likely to be in an accident and even knock down a pedestrian because you are reading the advertising?

I just don't get why motorways are singled out. Now perhaps not all advertising should be allowed but certainly local business and restaurants etc should be able to advertise along the motorway so people know they are there, especially informative ones.

It is a serious offense to consume psychoactive substances while driving.

Why do the same muppets who are getting rid of the trailer ads pay small fortunes for artistic sculptures to be placed beside some of the new motorways, seems every bit as much if not more of a distraction to drivers.

I think the placing of these artistic sculptures comes from the fact that the funding for a lot if not all of theses roads comes from the EU and as part of the funding grant ( say 5% ) has to be spent on such a sculpture/piece of art . So the councils have no choice but to have them there .

As said earlier it would be much better time and energy spent by the RSA/councils improving the roads rather than worrying about businesses trying to advertise on private land - it's a welcome distraction to boring mway driving .

Not as serious as a farmer parking a truck with writing on the side of it, wont somebody think of the children.

If you bothered following the thread at all.

The subject is all about farmers leasing out land for the purpose of commercial advertising to property developers, retail products and hotel accommodation etc. How often do you see farmers advertising their milk or bails of hay from the sides of motorways.?

Seem's there is somewhat of a cull on advertising in Galway, Last week the city council took all the sandwich boards from business's around the city... Maybe it's time to start getting creative.
do they have any reason for that, seems totally over the top to me

I approve of the removal of unplanned advertising on public property. Don't know about Galway, but ads are being zip-tied to the legs of road signs in Limerick, often in places where they obstruct the sight-lines of drivers (emerging from junctions, commercial entrances, roundabouts etc).

Right now, I'd bet there's a farmer from Offaly changing his name to paddy power and tagging all of his motorway-adjacent sheep/cows :D

If a sign distracts someone, that person should not be driving.[/QUOTE]

I agree , How do the Formula 1 drivers handle all the advertising around the tracks ?
