Liverpool v Trabzonspor Thursday 7:45 [Match Thread]

So the Europa League Thursday night action continues.

17 more games to Landsdowne Road.

Masch and Dagger out of the game with knocks and doubtful for the City game :(

Dagger sounds like he's not in the greatest of shape at all :(

Reposted the bit about the squad list named on Monday. Even though Poulsen wasnt named Roy says he is in the squad - presume it's a late injury call-up deal.

I think we could see a pretty stong line-up for this as Trabzonspor are no mugs and we really don't want to be going to Turkey looking for a result.

Joe Cole is a dead cert for the ninety minutes I'd imagine (unless he gets sent off again :p) Wouldnt be surprised to see Carra and Skrtel as CBs - and I would imagine Johnson at RB. Between Kelly and Aurelio at LB and I think this will depend on Aurelio's fitness. If Fabio does start I'd be surprised if he plays the full 90 given his match fitness so Kelly coudl be on for a sub appearance at some stage.

Midfield is a bit of a mine-field between Gerrard, Lucas, Poulsen and Aquilani.
Would guess at Gerrard starting behing Cole with one of Lucas or Poulsen beside him. I'd hazard a guess at Poulsen as Lucas could be saved for the City game if Masch is doubtful. Aquilani to probably replace Gerrard in the second half.

Up front I'd imagine Dave to start with Torres probably sprung around the 60 minute mark. Could see Babel start on the left and might be that Kuyt is rested for Maxi. Some people might be disappointed by the lack of young'uns to feature but I reckon the plan is use the first-teamers to get to the group stages which would give us greater scope to use fringe players/youngsters against the weaker opposition in some of these games. This game is about getting a result while carefully managing the squad on the fitness/sharpness balance with City's game on Monday in mind.

Both ITV and Setanta Ireland are showing this.

    Reina
    -Johnson--Carra-Skretl--Aurelio-
    Gerrard----Poulsen
    --Maxi
    Cole
    Babel--
    Dave

Subs: Cav, Kyrgiakos, Kelly, Torres, Lucas, Kuyt, Jovanovic

Trivia Fact: One Rigobert Song was their captain last year but was released in the summer.
    No Masch versus Trabzonspor
    18th Aug 2010 - Latest News

Javier Mascherano and Daniel Agger will not feature against Trabzonspor on Thursday night after picking up injuries against Arsenal.

Mascherano sustained a pull in his calf while Agger is still suffering from concussion after a ball to the face which has left him with no recollection of Sunday's clash.

Both players now face a race against time to be fit for Monday's match at Manchester City.

Asked by reporters whether Mascherano was in his plans for the Europa League play-off, Roy Hodgson said: "Javier will always be in my plans until the day comes when he leaves the club. And for me that will be a long time in the future if I can get my wish. But he's injured at the moment and won't play tomorrow.

"He came off after about 80 minutes on Sunday with a slight pull in his calf muscles and has only just started to jog today.

"The worry for us is that he won't be fit for Monday.

"Daniel got concussed so he's not doing that well. We're three days after the incident and he's still suffering from concussion and has got no memory of the game.

"We can only hope that it settles down in time for Monday's match with Manchester City. There was never any question he'd be fit for tomorrow.

"He is resting. He was at the club this morning, I was talking to him, but he's not able to do much at the moment because he's suffering from headaches. Even something as simple as reading a newspaper or watching TV can give him a headache so he needs to take it easy. I know how he feels doing all these press conferences!"

Mascherano's absence could open the door for new boy Christian Poulsen to make his Liverpool bow.

Hodgson added: "He's in the squad. I haven't picked the team yet but he's in the squad and there's a chance he'll appear tomorrow.

"We'll only find out when he plays if he's fit. He's only played 20-25 minutes in a friendly match for Juventus. He's done a lot of physical training so in that respect he's right up there with the rest of the players but he hasn't played a lot of football and so is not match fit.

"But he's a quality player. He's been at Schalke, Seville, Juventus and now Liverpool. The players here are like the ones he's played with in the past and his quality is Liverpool quality."

So the new squad list for the Trabzonspor game seems to be up on the UEFA website.

Very interesting omission is that Poulsen isn't on it

    Insua isn't listed either :(

Nemeth, El Zhar, Plessis and Itandje still look to be in the persona non grata category along with Insua

No other major surprises although Aurelio is listed as a midfielder as is Jovanovic (who I'm pretty certain was named as a forward last time)

Poulsen one is a fairly big surprise though

    Added
    Pepe
    Aurelio (listed as midfielder)
    Babel
    Masch
    Torres
    Kuyt

    Dropped
    Degen

    Diego Cavalieri
    Pepe Reina
    Martin Hansen
    Péter Gulácsi

    Glen Johnson
    Daniel Agger
    Sotiris Kyrgiakos
    Danny Wilson
    Jamie Carragher
    Stephen Darby
    Martin Kelly
    Steven Irwin
    Martin Škrtel
    Daniel Ayala
    Jack Robinson

    Alberto Aquilani
    Fábio Aurélio

    Joe Cole
    Milan Jovanović
    Maxi Rodríguez
    Ryan Babel
    Javier Mascherano
    Lucas
    Jay Spearing
    Jonjo Shelvey

Poulsen can't play as he is not named in the squad for this round of the EL.

Well Roy says he's in the squad, so I'd hope he knows what's going on......you did read my post didn't you??? :p

I think there's some rule about replacing players who are injured up to 24 hours before a game so I'd imagine with Masch and Agger out he could replace one of them - might see Inusa listed as well (probably a lot less likely though)

Supposed ITK lineup for the match

    Reina
    Kelly
    Carra
    Kyrgiakos
    Aurelio
    Poulsen
    Lucas
    Maxi
    Cole
    Babel
    Jovanovic

Didnt think Agger would still be f**ked.

Would like to see Aurelio start and not get injured along with Lucas taking Masch's place.

Expecting a comfortable game at home winning 2-0

Shouldn't be any problems for Liverpool.

Anybody know why Pacheco isn't in the squad?

Edit: As in why he isn't in the starting eleven or on the bench. I can see he's in the officially named squad. I wonder if he's to be replacing Joe Cole on Sunday...

If the leaked line up is correct I reckon Jovanovic will play up front.

    Reina
    Kelly-Carra-Kyrgiakos-Aurelio
    ----Poulsen--Lucas
    Maxi
    Cole
    Babel
    Jovanovic

Bench? Well there are pix of Gerrard and Torres at Melwood training yesterday evening
so its fair to assume they will be watching on pitchside

Its on ITV1 - I think its the qualifiers they have the rights to in the EL (if they want them). Then its Channel 5 all the way! :pac:

I see a few posters have the team w/o Dave?

    Is he injured or rested?

I thought he'd be a dead cert on the team tonight tbh.

Subs: Cavalieri, Torres, Wilson, Ngog, Spearing, Skrtel, Pacheco.

Hmm - no Gerrard, Kuyt, Johnson, Aquilani or Masch or Agger

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭MonkeyTennis

Agger cant remember his name. No surprises there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,435 ✭✭✭ilovelamp2000

The Aquilani transfer is turning out rather horribly.

I hope he isn't involved because we're lining up a sale before the end of the window rather than it being another injury.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

    ZOMG! Well not really.

I'm Babel's biggest critic but I'd f**king love to see him bang a goal or two in tonight and show that he really wants to play for us.

I just read on the Superthread that Tomkins says he has a stomach bug.

He'd have been sacked by now if he worked with me.

I'm pretty sure his ZOMG was about the lineup, not the Aquilani thing.

    I don't care.

I'm actually a little bit angry about this Aquilani thing. Is his wife the worst cook in the world ? He always has stomach problems

Maybe he's having an allergic reaction to something .............. probably football.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

It is frustrating. I'd say we'll know pretty quickly if he has a future in England.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,101 ✭✭✭AidySevenfold

I'm looking forward to seeing Babel up front, and Poulsen as well.
Hopefully see Pacheco off the bench as well. come on Liverpool :D

i'm really looking forward to this for some reason.

i hope Babel proves himself a bit up front.

it'd be awesome to be able to bring Torres on for 20 minutes at the end to give him some extra fitness.

Who is the co-commentator on Setanta? I missed his name, but hear him being called David, and he spent 7 months at Liverpool apparantly. The best guess I could come up with is David Speedie, but I never remember hearing doing this before.

    You're probably correct.

I normally hate the Setanta commentators, but I switched over from ITV when I heard Tyldesly say Reina needs to redeem himself tonight.
