Why does that minute seem so long when you flick over at 6 and you just want to catch the headlines...

No harm in 1 minute relaxation..just before folk get bombarded with politicians wearing make up..Obama and the rest moaning about the Russians and other misfortune.

What an odd thread to bump. It should go, there's no justification for it. If you can't relax/reflect for one minute without the TV telling you to do so, you have my pity.

I think the idea is the t.v is such a distracting vampire that having 1 minute free from advertising and usual pimping it is a good thing...or else..all hail commercialism..

    Here's a mad idea.......turn off the tv.

Yeah it should go. The state should not be affiliating itself with any religious group. It should be completely independent as there are many many different cultures and religions now present in Ireland... .and that is only going to increase thankfully.

You know TVs have an 'off' button right?

The problem I have with making things secular is where does it end?

You want religion removed from the public sphere so you start by taking religion from schools, from the media but what next? If religion should be a private thing should the churches, cathedrals and chapels be gotten rid of? What about grave yards? Or any building that bears any kind of religious mark? Should we be forced to remove any religious emblems from our homes just in case a non-religous person sees it and becomes offended? Do you exact punishment whenever some-one says in public 'Oh my god' or 'Jesus, Mary and Joseph'. Do you stop people having weddings, funerals and christenings? Do we stop celebrating Easter, Christmas etc? Do we stop people wearing crosses around their necks?

Where does it stop. Once the Angelus goes something else will end up in the line of fire.

It sounds drastic but to me it's only a short stop from making things secular to pushing religion underground completely and making it something that you have to hide and be ashamed of.

That's my worry and I do think there are people who would like to see that happen.

Personally I am not concerned with what private people / organisations do with their own free time / money, so getting rid of churches and christenings is not something that rational people would call for.

As for punishing someone who says oh my god......that's just being daft.

All people are asking for is that the angelus go because it is being broadcast on the state channel. If it were being broadcast on a catholic church run channel then that obviously wouldn't effect them as its not being funded by them.

I don't really understand why, when people make a point of highlighting how and why religion is not relevant to them, some people feel the need to make wild statements about 'where this will lead'........it won't lead anywhere.

Personally i believe it should include diffrent cultures and different religions..its a nice minute as said..before being bombarded with the hatred in the world. If it bothers people they can always turn off the t.v..you know the tv has an off button..

Keep it, just to annoy the atheists.

Of course an ideal solution would be to change the name to reflect it's new spiritual nature, 'Minute of Reflection' or something like that, and ditch the church bells.

They did that for a while on the TV but it never took off.

Slightly off topic - but the bells send my dog into a frenzy and he howls like a wolf every time it comes on, he also jumps on the back of the sofa doing this. He never does it any other time and he stops as soon as the last bell is silent, we reckon he's objecting but we can't be sure .....

I have yet to meet anyone who turned Catholic by watching the Angelus

I've yet to meet an Apple user who switched to Windows because of an ad. Microsoft and Apple still pay for their adverts.

I think we should have a referendum on it
