If you start a new thread or post a reply to one, below the text box are a number of icons that you can use, happy, sad, smiley, thumbs up/down, etc. The reason they appear beside the threads is because the thread starter selected one when they posted. They don't mean anything really, they're just meant to convey how the poster is feeling at the time they posted.
