Anybody remember the board game Quandary ?

    It had a 12 x 12 board of squares of several different colours, in a random-ish layout, 4 red and 4 blue playing pieces and 12 yellow cards numbered 1-12.

    The cards were shuffled and used to select the initial placement of the pieces. The pieces could move straight ahead or diagonally left or right, but only if the colour of that square matched the square in front of one of the opponents pieces. You could thus prevent your opponent from moving a piece by choosing your own moves carefully.

    We got it secondhand in UK in about 1985.
