Sound card?

I am starting to plan a new build. Always in the past I have used a sound card as opposed to on-board because apart from gaming I play music through my PC.

My question to the honourable sages is: Has on-board sound become good enough to make sound cards redundant for anything other than specialist use? Should I plan my build without one?

I think it has improved and for normal use it's good enough imo.
Its down to what quaility you want as a good soundcard will always be better sounding.
Another thing to remember is your speakers because if they aren't that good a decent soundcard can be wasted.

I have an Asus xonar card but i'm using the onboard atm and dont find it to be to much of a quality drop.
