It'll probably take a day or 2 to 'settle down' :)

Have you been on cod or anything ?

Tried to, PSN is down for maintenance. Oh the irony

    I'm getting a 13ms ping to Boards.ie (from run -> cmd)
70ms and 3-4mb/s down from speedtest

Yet 13.03 down and 1.45up with 18ms ping from the official UPC speedtest

    o.0

Speed tests can be funny sometimes(sometimes my download speed drops to like 200-500kbs), i'll lend you my "Furk.net" account later if you want to test it on a proper site. As long as you've a stable ping and decent upload you'll be raping in cod :)

Raping in CoD? I think you mean raping harder ;)
Thanks. Just after googling it, it's basically like a uTorrent search engine?

Nah, furk downloads torrents for you onto their website then allows you to download straight off the site at max speed.

Lee , try using dublin server for UPC instead of galway ;) For speediest that is. Also, like magill said , use a site to download a file at full whack . Afaik you can download a Linux ubuntu iso from one of the mirrors on their site and it will give a proper 'speed test'

Now that's more like it :p

Got 19.7 wired, so I'm thinking I might buy some homeplugs, or a really long LAN.

Double posting here but fook it . If it's not too much trouble I'd defo hard wire it Leeg . I reckon you'd knock another 15 ms of that ping if the wireless signal is going through floors / Walls etc . You should test with the laptop actually !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,127 ✭✭✭✭Leeg17

I'm getting a 17ms average ping to Boards.ie (from cmd)
    That ping was wired (34ms)
and when I do a speed test on the UPC website (wired) I'm getting 18ms. (19.7 download and 1.46 upload)

I'm inclined to agree with UPC/laptop moreso than speedtest.

Hey, eitherway it's way better than 3.5mb/s down and 70ms ping earlier. :D

    Thanks Eamo.

-Oh, and the laptop is up in my room while the router is downstairs in the kitchen (ie as far away from each other in the house as would be possible) so those wireless speeds were right

lee how long did it take upc to arrive? did you install it yourself? and what does it run through the normal phone line or is there some fibre cable sorcery involved

Ordered it Monday (well Tuesday because I didn't have bank details the first time they called), so 4 days in all.

As I said before there's a Boards deal for UPC. Ordering through that they sent out an engineer this morning and installation was free (I think it's normally somewhere near e40). Plus I'll get a e50 Carphone Warehouse voucher next month.

I'm not 100% sure what it runs through, I reckon fibre cable. You don't have to pay line rental, but there is a 7.75 charge on top of the base price if you don't take TV aswell as BB with them). Our estate was built nearly 8 years ago and it can take UPC. Give them a ring on 1890 940 624 to find if they can go to your house (some can only do phone and not TV or BB for example).

    Regards, UPC: Lee
    :pac:

In the car yesterday and I was kinda half listening to the radio when I heard something about some company planning on doing a trial run of speeds up to 1.5GB downloads. Anyone know any more than this?

I was only barely listening so this may not even be in Ireland:p
