North or south from Portumna?

hey there myself and a few friends are taking a long weekend at the end of august and hiring out a cruiser - there is a bit of a debate between us on which would be the best direction to head from our collection point in Portumna

South into lough Derg or North up river?

We're looking to have the sailing experience- while also wanting to stop off at various nice towns for food and drink and maybe a bit of sight seeing - but altogther a generally relaxed weekend of sailing

Would love if someone who knows the area could give a few pointers or advice on what direction to head? where to stop off etc
