So the dust is settling on the 10 mile, next up is the half.

Entries are still open, but only for another week or so, so sign up if you haven't already

The course is tougher than the 10, adding in the Kyber and the Furry Glen, but we will have pacers to drag us around and I plan to take full advantage

I did the 10 mile yesterday and Im signed up for the half marathon. 10 miles is the furthest Ive run and had a reasonable time yesterday, any tips for a first time half marathoner?

If you made it around the 10 you'll be fine for the half. It's only a little bit further :) Just keep the training up, see if you can get out for 11/12 in the coming weekends, down to 7 or 8 the week before the race.

Well in Raycun! Delighted to hear there'll be pacers - christeb helped me to a sub 2 hr finish in Kildare in May so going for a little better based on 5 mile time (I'm not counting yesterday's 10 mile time as I was just coming back from injury). It'll be my first looking for a pb too as up til now (5 & 10K, 5 & 10m and half) have all been my first time at the distance....

Yeah, we'll be standing in the appropriate wave and have big ballons strapped to our backs with target time written on.
Remember, pacers will be going by chip times so if you plan on following one of the pacers, make sure to start off close to them.

Can I ask - is the map to scale? Mile 9-10 seems short. Not that I'd be complaining now!!

Yet to call in a time for this one.

The mile markers on the map probably aren't exact, but the ones on the course would be in the right place.

Did the Kildare Half in May and managed to stick with Christeb (pacing 2hours) until mile 6 and then I lost him. Ended up finishing in 2:04:54. The ankle was pretty bandy then though so I'm quietly confident of a possible sub 2 hour. Hopefully I'll be able to stick with Menoscemo and the balloons. Even better if I can overtake! :)

I'll be tracking menoscemo all the way hopefully. Did the Kildare half in a poor 2:24, the aim since then has been to do this under 2h. I did the 5 mile in 40:15, and for some reason could only manage the 10 mile in 1:39. My training runs are generally faster so a bit annoyed with that time, 1:30 was the target. Just going to put it behind me and put the work in over the next 4 weeks.
Going to try a 10 mile and 12 mile run at (or near) the required pace over the next few weekends.

After a dissappointing time in the 10 mile (following 3 weeks of not training properly), All I want for the Half is to finish without stopping/walking. I know that as long as i behave for the next 4 weeks I can probably go faster than that, but since its my first half Im being kind to myself!!

first one so dont want to have too high an expectation or it could affect my whole race, could go out to fast and blow up , anything under 1hr 33 is a bonus
really hope i have a good race , have been training specifically for this since the mini marathon

can anyone tell me where are the hills on this course ? what are they like in terms of lenght , steepness etc ?
did the bupa 10km race there in april , any overlap with the HM in sep ?

Kyber road is a fairly long drag, but the killer is just before mile 12, a short, sharp shock at the point where you'll be tired anyway. The first 7 miles are flat.

There are 4 hills on the half course.
Ths first one at about mile 7.5, where the Kyber road starts. Its not to bad and lasts about .3 of a mile.

The second one is where the footpath cuts onto military road. This is a bit steeper, however a fair bit of the hill is removed by not having to start at the bottom of the road.

The third just below St Marys Hosp, at about mile 10.5 and is a long slow drag up to the mile 11 marker. Again not to bad.

There is another hill up out of the furry glen, but can remember much about this, as its not part of the normal series of road races in the park. But again not to bad.

Do a few light hill sessions before the race and you should be fine.

You'll remember mile 11-12 from the Bupa race. Back then it was 7.5-9km

we seem to be communicating across threads here , was that the hill that you could see people climbing on your right as you approached ?
can you brief me on the pain of it again

Lol Yeah, we must have similar jobs.

That's it; they send you down about 200m a side road to a little lake just so you can come up steeper again.

Don't know about you, but i was considering giving up running when i was on the uphill part.

As gerard said, the only other hill is the Kyber from about mile 7-8. In the Bupa race this was the fast section because we were taking it in the opposite direction (km 4-5 I think). other than that the course is fairly flat/ downhill.

Decided to pick a round number, and after my disappointing PB in the 10 I'm not going to expect to be beating my Half PB from Kildare as the mojo just seems to have left me right now. Not worried about any hills in the park any more after the ones I keep getting sent round in club training now I think I consider the Phoenix Park to be totally flat.
