Lol WB, we are actually all real people and it is cool meeting the same people over again at the different races. We're not all that weird and we sometimes even go to the pub for pints and to discuss things other than running  such as football

You got a brazilian for the Cork Marathon? That was a bit risky. I never even have a shave on the morning of a race in case it itches.:p

Cool- would be great to have a get to know my fellow athletes ;)

After a dodgy enough 18km this morning (my longest run to date) I'm more confident of being able to complete the distance- next all I have to do will be keep up with the balloon!

The pacers will do the whole distance, not like the championship pacers you see on telly or the big city marathons that drop out part way round. These pacers will take you all the way to the line at a steady pace, although they will probably start shouting at anyone following them to speed up towards the end and go for the faster time. If you are next to them when crossing the start line and the finish line then you should hit the time with a few seconds to spare, your aim is to beat them to the finish line.

Aiming for sub 1:35. I know that there are no pacers for this time. Would it be a bad idea to go off with the 1:30 group and see how i go for the first mile.

It would be a really bad idea! If you start runner faster than you have trained for, you'll build up lactate quickly in your legs, and suffer very soon into the race. Better to go at a steady pace for the first 7-8 miles, and if you're feeling good, then up the pace (at a steady rate).

Unless you secretly think you should be aiming for 1:30?;)

I was thinking about this too. It's 6.52 pace vs. 7.15 which is a fair jump (for me anyway).

I was thinking about this too. It's 6.52 pace vs. 7.15 which is a fair jump (for me anyway).

also a fair jump for me, i not to sure if i would be able to sustain that pace for the 13 miles. My logic is that the first half seems to be flat and i could judge in the first couple of miles if i could keep the pace or if not then just hold back a bit

That 23 seconds per mile could be the difference between a perfect race and an awful race. I'm not trying to put you off, just pointing out that I wouldn't go out at the faster target unless you are willing to accept the consequences that you might just blow up and have a bad day. Did you do the Frank Duffy last week? What kind of time?

Alternative strategy is to print out a pace band for 1:35, and if you're still feeling good after 10 miles, then gradually increase the pace. You'll have a more enjoyable race and experience.

My goal is under 1:35, i dont think i will be able to sustain the pace for the 1:30, but i have a problem trying to pace myself. 1st year doing this distance, waterford last year was 1:39, connemara was 1:42, didnt do the 10 mile but did the (just under)5mile in 32.

That pace generator is good, keeping a sustained pace has been a problem for me, might just with the 1:35 pace until mile 10, as you said. I would be gutted if i tried for faster and then blew up in the last few miles. Thanks for the advice folkes

Some advice please! I'm attempting this as my first half marathon (finally bit the bullet and signed up today). I have been steadily increasing my training over the last few months, going out 4 times a week, including one long run which has been increasing by a mile per week and up to 11 miles last week. Since we have only 2 and a bit weeks left before the race, I was thinking of running the the course (more or less) later this week and then next wk bringing my long run back to 10 miles and trailing off the last week to shorter runs of 5 or 6 miles max. Does this sound like a good idea? As my friend reminds me, I'm not looking to win any medals here :D, but just to finish the race in as close to 2 hrs as I can make it.
    What do you think?

i'd take the last week even handier. Hal Higdon's novice plan, for instance, only has 4, 3, and 2 mile runs in the last week

It's not entirely necessary, but wouldn't be the worst strategy either. Most people new to the distance would run their long runs to 11 or 12 miles max, but it would at least give you that confidence boost for the day itself. But as I said, it's not necessary to cover the entire distance in training before the event. If you are going to follow this strategy, then bring your long run the following week back to 8-9 miles, so you can be sure you recover properly from the 13.1 mile training run, and most importantly, run th 13.1 it at a significantly slower pace than the pace you plan to run the actual race in.

Keeping it steady for the first half with a bit in reserve for the hilly second half is the best plan for pretty much all runners

Thanks, sounds like good advice. I did the 10 mile course twice a couple of days apart about a week before the actual race itself and although the confidence boost of having run the route without keeling over was great, I could have done better on race day.
Lets hope for a nice sunny day like the it was that day. The Phoenix park is such a great place to run.

Don't know what to put down for this. I ran the 10 miler in 88:55. I've been training steadily enough since. Is maintaining the same pace for an extra three miles a realistic assessment of 4 weeks of fitness gain or can I improve that pace slightly to 8:30 miles. Decisions decisions. Anyone care to offer any advice? Running 4 times a week, approximately 25 - 30 miles. Ran for 2 hours last Friday, plan to do the same next Friday and then race the kilmore 10k the following Saturday and an easy lead up to this.

I'd imagine you'll have improved as you were not doing much before the 10 miler and when you are getting back to fitness the gains come pretty quick. ( I ran a 5 miler at the end of last december in 40 minutes off the back of little training and after a months solid training in January I did the raheny 5 in 35:30).

I'd say wait to see how you go in the 10k race and then you should have a fair Idea of pace for the half.

I did the 2nd lap part this afternoon - it was roasting hot - though it was nice to have a tiny bit of a breeze was behind me going up the hills.

My Polar HRM recorded temps between 24 and 29 degrees (measured at my wrist).

I have attached the altitude readings from my HRM. I blurred out the start and end because it is profile of my route to and from the Park.
Eastbound Chesterfield Ave is a long gradual descent, a descent that has to be made up somewhere :p

Ran the full course today. Peeps wanna hope its not as hot as it was today. No problems with the course. A few narrow parts but nothing major.
Do you have a Garmin Connect link? Damobrew's elevation profile is a little too crimewatch for my liking. :)
