Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

(possibly a question for Hard Worker)

When does the road from Parkgate Street to the zoo and the Lords Walk car park open again? My parents were thinking of coming in to watch the end of the race...

    Details of road closings here:

I managed 1:32:52 for the Edinburgh Half earlier this year.
1hr 13 for the 10 mile but I started a little too slow.

Sub 1:32:30 is the target anyway :)

The issue for your parents will be parking - maybe they can park in the zoo car park, on Lords Walk, and walk up.
Or, if stewards permit, they might be able to park in the visitor centre, off the middle roundabout.

Can anyone confirm a change to the course?
There's an updated map on the race series website, which I've attached.

    1. Seems like the loop at the end of the Chesterfield Ave has been dropped.
    2. After we run up the Khyber Road, there's a loop before running back down Acres Road
    3. Three water stations now shown

Sure looks like that's the case. Also seems to take in Lower Glen Road instead of upper Glen Road, but that may have been the case already.

Ran 12.1 miles in training today. Do you think I could run with the sub 2 hour pacer or would I wear myself out early on in the half next week?

How long did it take you to run the 12.1?

How did you feel doing it at that pace? You should definitely be able for 2 hours for the half providing you weren't absolutely wrecked at the end of that.

No I wasn't in a bad way, I seem to find the first 5 miles tough enough and then settle in.
I was just very, very stiff when I stopped at the end and some soreness in the balls of my feet.

You'll be fine, I'm pacing 2 hours so come up to me at the start and I'll make sure you get there! :D

can anyone recommend a good place to enter and park on the north/west side of the park? or does everybody pretty much enter via the parkgate side?

i need a quick getaway afterwards towards the M50 and it usually takes ages to get out via Parkgate

Speaking of which, can someone put me down for 1:49 on the table (I have a habit of wrecking them)

I'd come off the M50 at the Blanch exit, heading towards Castleknock, go up Auburn Ave in Castleknock, turn left and try to find some parking around the housing estates there. It's about a 10 min walk to start from there and it's a good way to stretch out the legs after the race too. I hope I don't regret sharing my parking spot when I see you nipping into a space before me :D

Hi All - I cant seem to see whether there will be waves for the HM on Saturday and if so what they are...have we ditched the waves in favour of pacers?? I am only asking as someone who expects to be well slower than 2hours...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25 Sparky101

I think I read in the blurb they sent out that there will be 3 waves.

Speaking of pacers, can I ask the 2hr pacers where you will be standing - end of wave 2 or start of wave 3? Just in case I am feeling brave and decide to follow you !

Going to run this on sat and prob start at front of the second wave like last year, found it so much fun passing loads from the first wave - great for the confidence.

Ran this course last Thursday and its
I'm no expert runner just training for the my fiorst full marathon ..and still only on 16y mile..... anwyas heres my two cents./
The first 7mile is ok ..then.Kyber road is tricky as its uphill then from 10-11.5 upper glen road is tough, i went on the upper gleen road rather than the lower" fuzzy glen" so I got this part wrong but then the rest of it is not too bad....but was wrecked after ..and thats running at a really steady pace :o...

My advice is to try and run the course if you can" if you live in Dublin" over the next 2/3 nights..or even the latter part of it, because this is the tough part.....if not just leave some energy in the tank for a few hills ttowrads the end beofre the last mile or sio flat stretch....
I found the 8-9 mile stretch the most pleasant....

I see on the original course they had us running down and turning at chesterfield avenue and running back up to lords walk but they have since taken this part of the route....

anyways best of luck to all involved.....

Confident enough I can go under 90 minutes so I'll set myself a sterner task.

The hill back out of the furry glen up to Ordnance Survey Road is at least as bad as the Kyber uphill - but I wouldn't recommend running it at night!

At the start of the summer I´d hoped to be going for sub 1:25 but there´s not much of a chance of that after the training I´ve been doing!

You'll be fine, I'm pacing 2 hours so come up to me at the start and I'll make sure you get there! :D

Can you guarantee the same for me?
I'm going to be doing well to finish ( and if so on two legs......although I reckon that going at a decent pace is my only hope)

Would it be better to try and bring a water bottle?
Do the pacers stop for water or is it a continuous run with them?
I don't want to be stopping and then trying to play catch up. thx

We'll be slowing down (bit not stopping) at the water tables I'd imagine (the 2 hr pacers). You'll have to drink on the run, which can be difficult from the cups they hand out. Brining your own water bottle therefore might be a god idea.

I dropped down to Lifestyle sports on Graffton st there recently and picked up a running belt for about 15/16 euro..so this might be an idea..especially if your going to continue running..., it has three small bottles attached..and is dead handy..as trying to pick up those plastic cups can be messy....
I have ran with it a few times and it doesn't cause any discomfort or anything -so maybe a solution ?

Cant really see where the change in route has come in relation to last year???

Anyway first 7 miles are grand then we hit the hill coming out of the Kyber. That'll be a bit of a shock to the legs after a relatively flat first 7 but after that mile 8 -9.5 is easy, good recovery stretch after the hill.
Then we emerge half way up the dreaded military hill but seen as though its only halfway its not so bad. Then we decend for a bit and hit the upper glen road which is never a fun hill(not as bad as the full millitary hill though). The good thing after this hill is that theres a chance for a breather as we head left down into lower glen at 11miles. But then theres a climb out of this which could cause problems as everybody will be hanging on for dear life at this late stage in the race.
Hit 12miles adjacent to ordenance survey and by then its a flat run in to the finish.

    So first 7 miles easy
    Hill at about 7.5miles
    8 - 9.5 is easy
    Half hill at 9.5
    Hill at 10.5
    Hill at 11.5
Last 1 mile and a bit easy

From what I can remember from last year, the path surface down there is pretty broken... Careful with the footing...

At a guess the likes of the 1:30 pacers will not be slowing down for the water, but people running with them should be more practised at drinking on the move anyway.

I think it (Lower Glen Road) was resurfaced for the Great Ireland Run this year? I've run along there a few times since, I don't remember it being bad...

None of the pacers will be slowing down or stopping at the water stations, this goes for all the pace bands. If you want to take some water, do so, but as said above, practice drinking on the run. Step to the side and walk a few steps while drinking if you must, and then catch back up with the pacers, who will be running evenly throughout the race.

(I'm helping to organize the pacers, and that's the agreed pacing strategy. For hills, water, injured runners, the pacers will keep to a steady pace).

On a different note, what are people doing in terms of training this week, with the race on Saturday?

Was thinking about tempo 8m tonight,
    Rest Wednesday
    6 mile easy Thursday
    Rest Friday

    Any opinions?

I would have thought than an 8 mile tempo run this evening would adversely impact your performance on Saturday (4 days time), unless your plan is to run maybe 2-3 miles at tempo pace, with the rest aerobic/easy. Might be an idea to include some strides on your 6 mile easy run on Thursday (6x100m) too.

    Thanks Krusty,

Ill dial it back a bit tonight, and didnt consider the strides on Thursday, but will give them a go now..

Looking forward to keeping up with your and ecoli balloon's on Saturday for that PB...

Weather looks good so far. Hopefully the wind will stay off...

I am hoping to run the course tonight so 13 mile tonight
..taking it very easy thou..just nice and steady pace...
    maybe 4 mile tomorrow..
    Thurs- rest
    Fri - rest

I'd do less tonight. If you really want to run the course, maybe just run the second half of it.
(Though that end of the park gets dodgier as the evenings get darker)
