Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

THE ONE/ONE CHALLENGE - DEPTH of FIELD

As suggested by Martron – this is a new type of Challenge- you are only allowed to enter ONE photo and ‘voters’ are only allowed ONE vote (anyone can vote).
Voting will be done by way of Poll after the closing date for entries.

The Theme for this ONE/ONE Challenge is Depth of Field.

I am definitely not the right person to be setting ‘technical’ tasks – but I have gone back over some of the photos I posted on Boards.ie for DoF examples.

Here we see how using a short focal length lens and a medium Fstop works to keep all elements of the photo in focus (f11 /18mm lens)

    91go7q.jpg

Contrast that with using a long lens with a low Fstop (f4.5 / 300mm ) and see how the fact that the background is thrown out of focus adds power to the action

    htwbb6.jpg

Back to the mid Fstop/short focal length again (f14 / 12mm ) and we get sharpness (relative) from the foreground right to the top of that Valencia Science building.

    2ckivo.jpg

Lastly using that 300 lens at 5.6 - we again throw the background way out of focus so that we can focus on the more important things( the bulmers that is)!!

    14vsksl.jpg

*Photos must be posted within 1 week of the day the task was set – so the closing time/date is 9pm on Monday 30th August 2010.
*No old photos. Only photos taken with this ONE/ONE CHALLENGE in mind qualify.

Therefore, the photo must be taken after 7 am on the 23rd August 2010.
(Please do not hide Exif data).
*Photos must be on the given task.
    *Only ONE photo per entrant.
Most people appreciate constructive criticism – so it is welcome.

The next CHALLENGE is to be chosen by the person who gets the most votes in the Poll.
Voting by way of Poll will commence at 9 pm on Monday 30th August and will last until 9pm on Saturday 4th September with the new Challenge to start the following Monday.

I think I may have it licked...50mm non zoomy lens, 3.5f, 1/3200s, ISO 200. Does that not seem like a very very fast shutter speed?

A few people have mentioned having 'new toys'

    What are they?

Would the earlier posters to the thread mind re-editing (if within timescale) to give brief details of the technical aspects of their photos-

    in terms only of

    (1)Lens Focal Length
    (2) F-stop

This would help us all to learn:)

    razor sharp

This was just the set up shot and I had intended isolating one of the razors and casting the rest into 'blur'. But they kept falling off so I danced on them and ground them into the soil- just as a warning to any future props:)

But at least you can see how the low f stop with long lens makes the background blur.

On the Poll I put in the wrong time for the closing date for votes.

Is it possible to go back into a poll that you have set to amend a mistake?

    How:confused:

Just to announce that the Closing time as stated on the poll is wrong by 24 hours
    (my mistake -sorry)

The official closing time for votes in 9 PM Saturday 4th September.

That is to give the winner a bit of time to come up with the next ONE/ONE Challenge which is then to start anytime on Monday the 6th.

:D yes, 6 brothers and sisters. All of whom would say 'ya wha'?' if I'd told them to vote for a photo of an eye where only 1mm of it was in focus.

For a second there I was a bit worried, but I checked the results and Squareballoon is racing ahead, phew!

Love the poll voting actually, makes it way easier to see who's in the lead, and how many people took part etc... ahhh and the thrill of ticking that button, the little coloured stripes ! I'm in poll heaven right now :D.
There should be a countdown to the end thingy though, would heighten the suspense even more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭Martron

the poll has a closing time . after that you cant vote. there is a time on the top of it it think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,700 ✭✭✭Mountainsandh

I know, I was thinking more in the lines of an actual countdown timer, like number of days/minutes/seconds left to closing time... it would be more exciting if the poll was taking place over 2 days or so then though. (excuse the overuse of prepositions and adverbs here :p)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,324 ✭✭✭keps

The official closing time for votes per the rules page 1 is 9pm this evening.

However, as I am heading out soon and won't be back till late and as the voting is so clear-cut I am now declaring Squareballoon the winner of the Challenge.:)

Well done Squareballoon and we look forward to the next ONE/ONE Challenge.
