So, when are nominations open until?
Someone suggested one or two weeks. I'd lean towards the former: I think the thread will have eased off by then.
(I might make a new sticky thread for nominations only to save clutter if that's cool with people)
Makes sense. Would you be so good as to split out the relevant posts here?

I'll assume someone else is going to nominate Twelve Angry Men, leaving me to push slightly more obscure stuff!

    My nominations would be:

    Tom Jones (1963)
    Brazil (1985)
    Divorce - Italian Style (1961)

With thanks to Darko for the suggestion, I'm going to use one of my nominations for 13 Tzameti, an awesome French movie I had the good fortune to see recently. Incidentally "Tzameti" is the Georgian word for Thirteen. A French movie shot in black & white which only serves to enhance the claustrophobic atmosphere of the movie.

The plot centers on a young 22 year old roof repair man named Sebastian, who opens a Pandora's box upon the promise of big rewards and finds himself sucked into an underground competition where the participants are playing for keeps. Once he crosses the threshold, there's no turning back.

While watching this I forgot the cast were actually actors - The entire film plays as if you're one of the gamblers sat on a stool in the corner observing everything, the tension can almost be measured as a physical presence in some scenes. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

"When the light goes out, YOU SHOOT!"

Well, I haven't had a chance to study the rocket science-esque method you guys have devised to determine this yet ;)

However, having had a quick glance through the IMDB list (which I always raise eyebrows towards!), these are three notable absences I'd like to put forward, or at least didn't spot within the core 250:

    Persona (Ingmar Bergman, 1966)
    Tokyo Story (Yasujirô Ozu, 1953)
    Festen (Thomas Vinterberg, 1998)

Is it just the nominating of films for voting?

    I'd like to nominate:

    Le samourai

    La Haine

    Almost Famous

Yes, this is just nominations. Could a mod please change the title to something like "Boards.ie favourite movie list - nominate three films max"?

Given that it seems to have died down quite a bit already, it's probably best that we close the nominations next week. Any objections?

I realise i'll get a lot of flack for these choices but here's my nominations for best film :

    Back to the Future 1
    Terminator 2 : Judgment Day
    Batman : The Dark Knight

All your nominations are redundant. Please choose another three.

He has already nominated everything that is on the IMDB top 250, so choose something that isn't on the list.

I was going to go with Midnight Cowboy (hint, hint :)) , but was only allowed to choose 3, so I cut it.

Ah, ok. Read through the last few pages but didn't gleam that nugget of info lol

I'll have a think and get back to ya so. Was wondering why there were so few nominations!

    Is this still going ahead?

If so I'd like to nominate Grizzly Man because it is great.

I think the title of this thread needs to be changed in order to get more votes - or a seperate thread with the nominations so far moved there as I doubt most people who would like to vote have noticed that is what this thread has now become. I was only looking in here to see further suggestions on how to compile lists - so I don't think it should be closed this week as I'm sure loads more will add their top 3 once they are made more aware. So hard to pick just 3 not in the IMDB Top 250 but here goes

    1. Mean Streets (1973)
    2. As Good As It Get's (1997)
    3. Dances With Wolves (1990)

It's a real shame we can only limit it to 3 - Doing quick searches just made be realise how silly the IMDB list really is - I am gobsmacked that all of these commercial classics (well most of them are imo) do not feature in the top 250 - especially the likes of Mean St, Easy Rider, All The President's Men, Jurrasic Park and Dirty Harry - those five in particular are way more iconic than most of what does feature  - King Of Comedy, Mean Streets, Ronin, The Untouchables,Cape Fear (original and remake), A Bronx Tale (yep big DeNiro fan) The Insider, Carlito's Way, Scent Of A Women, Scarecrow And Justice For All (also big Pacino fan;) ) The Last Detail, Five Easy Pieces, Easy Rider, The Fugitive, Duel, Big, Deliverance, Mississippi Burning,The Outlaw Josey Wales, Dirty Harry, The Taking Of Belham 123 (original),Marathon Man,Midnight Cowboy, All The President's Men Halloween, The Hitcher (original), American Psycho, Zulu, Bullit, Superman 1 & 2, Miller's Crossing, The Italian Job, Last King Of Scotland, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Day Of The Jackal, , A Beautiful Mind, Falling Down,, Jerry Maguire, Leaving Las Vegas, Papillin, Ghostbusters, Midnight Run, Collateral, Malcolm X, Wonder Boys, The Abyss and The Game are others I'd have nominated off the top of my head that are not int he top 250. It's shocking considering some of the stuff that is on the list.

Agreed, I'd hoped the limited nature of IMDb's list would spur people into nominating some well known and unknown omissions whilst serving as a starting point so we didn't have to waste time and nominations building up the "usual suspects" for favourite movies.

Some other notable omissions I noticed that somebody may want to nominate:
    E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
    Lost in Translation (2003)
    Forbidden Planet (1956)
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
    West Side Story (1961)
    Good Will Hunting (1997)
    Sherlock Jr. (1924)
    Waltz with Bashir (2008)
    Hero (2002)

I'm seriously in shock that E.T is not in the top 250. It is surely one of 'those' films that just has to be there? It's a bit like 'Hey Jude' not featuring in a top 250 songs of all time. And Close Encounters as well? Those two are groundbreaking blockbusters - how can they not feature yet Avatar does? (and that is coming from someone who enjoyed Avatar but seriously). I also wouldve bet a lot of money that Lost in Translation would be given as well considering how critically acclaimed it is and loved by most people who have seen it.

Not in the IMDB Top 250

    I nominate:

The Life and Death of Col Blimp
From the great Powell and Pressburger

The Magnificent Ambersons - I cant believe this didnt feature in the Top 250

As suggested above, it would be very helpful if a moderator could alter the title. Perhaps, as suggested, this would let people know that this is the nomination process.

We'll keep it going for a further week.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Fight Club are both listed on the IMDB top 250.
The whole IMDB top 250 has already been nominated, so you have two more nominations if you wish.

An above poster suggested that the three nom max system was limiting. who votes to scrap it and go wild?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,783 ✭✭✭Hank_Jones

Yeah, I'd much prefer that tbh.

Considering that I have seen more than three really great films that are outside the top 250, I really would like that.

    The Commitments being one.

How many films nominated this way will actually get more than one vote?

Yes, that's the thing. Bear in mind that the nominations are for movies that you're actually considering voting for in your personal top 10/20 (Whichever we end up going with for the vote) and not movies you consider to be deserved of a place in the top250/top500 etc.

The one caution about unlimited nominations is I'd be a bit weary of someone coming along and pasting 20+ movies to nominate when they themselves will only be able to vote for 20 max outside the IMDB top250.

That said, I think we can all think of another few we might vote for that aren't here yet so how about upping it from 3 noms each to say 5? Would that be enough to allay people's concerns?

Also very conscious of the fine balance between being flexible in establishing a consensus modus operandi and excessively moving the goalposts.

I'd be for anything that maximises the participation in the actual vote after this nomination phase is done in a few more days. Realistically we need 50+ to get a nice distribution throughout the large data set, more would be even better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭SVG

An above poster suggested that the three nom max system was limiting. who votes to scrap it and go wild?

If that happened, everyone's final top 10 vote would be the same as their nominations for the shortlist. I think it's nice to have to edit your choices and will make for a more interesting poll.

Maybe, in addition to the imdb 250, we could use the Sight & Sound or the AFI top movies list to ensure the classics are included.

I am worried though, considering the relatively low amount of people nominating films and the already large shortlist, that votes in the final poll will end up being dispersed all over the place with no clear winners.

Ideally, it'd be great if we could rely on nominations from boardsies only, without using imdb or other lists, but it doesn't look like there's going to be enough nominations here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,565 ✭✭✭losthorizon

Other sites do it be decade first. You have a vote on the greates film of the pre 30's, 30s, 40,s , 50s etc

Everybody then votes on the decade winner to see what comes up at their favourite film. I mean using this system the last vote would have only 10 films.

I don't think American Psycho is there.I like that film.

Just going to mention some other favourites that I think deserve a place.
Obviously I have already given three nominations, just in case we do decide to go for a free for all.

    Blazing Saddles
    Moon
    Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter...and Spring
    L'appartement
    True Romance
    Rebel Without a Cause
    Blue Velvet
    Nikita
    The Breakfast Club
    The Outsiders

These films are actually in my top 30 films and I would almost certainly vote for them if I could.
