Social Work/French.

    Okay, so I really want to be a Social Worker. That is basically my dream job. But it's also my dream to live in France. I'd sorta like to be a teacher, but not as much as a Social Worker. For ages I just accepted it and I was gonna do Arts with French and English so that I'd have a degree in English (I love it, and I'd teach this if anything) and also be fluent/close to fluent in French. But lately I've been thinking that maybe there's a way that I could do both. Obviously not do two courses at once, but there are Business with French and Commerce with French courses. Does anyone know if there's a Social Studies with French course? If you do, I'll be in your debt for life.
    Oh and there's no CAO rush or anything, I just finished TY, starting 5th year next week.

    There is only place in Ireland where you can train as a social worker as an undergraduate and thats at Trinity College. The course is http://www.tcd.ie/courses/undergraduate/az/course.php?id=54

    I'd email Trinity and ask them yourself. :)

    I can't remember the specifics, but I know when I was thinking of going to Trinity there were some kind of extra evening classes available in various languages, including French. It would certainly be something to look into by having a look around the Trinity website/asking your careers teacher.

    Sorry I can't remember the details!

    Thanks a lot. On the link that Mark supplied, it says that on that course you can choose to study French or German in First and Second year, which'd be great. Points were 480 in 2008 and they're 465 this year, hopefully the trend will continue 'til 2012, because I'm doing 2 pass subjects!

    You're not qualified as a professional social worker after these courses, you would have to do further study. Trinity is the only one where you finish the course as an actual social worker.

    And what do you mean by further study? Another course after that? Work placements w/ evaluations etc?

    I would assume that another course would be involved, however I am not very knowledgeable on this subject at all. The best person to direct these questions to would be your career guidance teacher once you go back to school. You have two years to figure your options out and there's UCAS as an option too. You've done more research into college than most TYs, so enjoy the rest of your summer and seek help from a pro when you go back to school. Don't stress yourself too early! :p

    A social science degree willl not qualify you as a social worker. You will need to follow up with a post grad in Social Work to be qualifed. If you are thinking about taking this route, make sure you take major modules in Sociology and Social Policy, as these are generally required for entry into the postgrad.
