Hopefully they willl show a bit of humility this time round and listen to what people say - the development plans produced in the noughties were a joke, focusing on monumental levels of rezoning of land not needed for building which got us into an unholy mess. Something which SCC have never owned upto (witness places like Balisodare - these idiots owe us big time to listen this time round) Hopefullly this time they will listen to people with ideas about their lived in environment .

Here is an idea for you write in and tell them you want to see a cycleway/walkway along the line of the rail line from Collooney to Claremorris (in the case of the Sligo county plan as far as the Sligo/Mayo border) - if they did this much it would be step in the right direction.

Email them and tell them you want to see a greenway (cycling and walkway) on this line, cos one thing is for sure it ain't opening as a railway anytime soon.

I like the idea of a cycle/ walkway to Claremorris.

A decent road from Sligo to just before Ballinacarrow to just past Charlestown would also be top notch.

Don't forget to put in a sbmisison then - the more that do - the more they have to listen

Its great and this is exactly what I mean about the potential of the rail line from Collooney to the county border - so if you want to try and influence policy thinking of the council rattle off a quick email to the council to the specific address below but they need to get it by September 8th and by email is fine. (it costs nothing to make a submission)

Contributions are invited from anyone interested in the future development of County Sligo City and its settlements. You are therefore encouraged to examine the Draft Plan and associated documents, and exercise your statutory right to comment upon the draft proposals.

A report with recommendations on all valid submissions or observations received will be prepared and

presented to the elected Council members for their consideration.

All submissions should be made in writing (hard copy or e-mail), headed “Draft CDP 2011-2017” and sent to:

    Ms. Anna Jones

    Administrative Officer

    Planning Section

    Sligo County Council

    County Hall

    Riverside, Sligo

    Tel: 071 9111216

E-mails should be sent to dpu@sligococo.ie

If You believe the Collooney to Claremorris Rail line would add great value to the county tourist and leisure facilities if it were converted to a greenway (continuous walking and cycling trail). Then send an email to dpu@sligococo.ie headed Draft CDP 2011-2017 and say so……key points are:

The claremorris/Collooney rail line has been closed since the mid 1970s

It is not planned to be opened as part of Transport 21 – the only Government commitment is to protect the alignment

A greenway would protect the alignment and stop encroachment – and leave the opportunity to re-open the rail line in the future with a greenway running parallel to the rail line in the event it re-opens. (this has been done on many single track rural lines in the UK).

A very successful greenway has been created in Mayo – the Mulranny – Newport greenway is a great example of what can be done and it will attract visitors.

It will provide a safe walking and cycling route from the county boundary at Chalestown to Collooney, with the potential to extend it into Sligo town.

It is in line with government policy to develop a national network of cycleways and footpaths in an “off road” environment.

    Look at the website www.sligomayogreenway.com

    Etc etc.

If you can do this it would be a great help!

Theoretically, yes, but the main focus will be on Sligo Town.

Improved broadband service would be welcome for us depending on WiFi. But then I think us in the sticks are doomed to an inconsistent, fluctuating service.
