Smart Telecom LLU failure in Cork (Again)

Smart Telecom's LLU broadband & phones service in Cork have gone down. We had neither a phone dial tone or broadband until 3:30pm. The phone came back but there is still no Internet connectivity. The modem is sync'd with the exchange and has been all along, but there is no network connection onwards to the Internet.

This is the second failure this summer. A few weeks ago the service went down for several days due to a fibre fault that took their equipment at Wellington Rd exchange off-line. This was caused by rodent damage!!

It's all becoming rather annoying to put it mildly!

    Anyone else's connection down?

Had the exact same in the city and on the Wellington Road exchange earlier yesterday but it seems it was all of the south was affected.

Dunno what caused it, the delay in the repair the last time was due to eircon draggin their asses again on repairing the fibre.

It's been back up since last night, but the speed's dropped way off.

The modem is connecting at its usual :
    DownStream Connection Speed 13819 kbps
    UpStream Connection Speed 702 kbps

But, the speed and ping are absolutely terrible :

    Normally we'd have a ping <50ms and a connection of between 9 and 11mbit/s

Have you tried downloading a large .iso from ftp://ftp.heanet.ie or somewhere similar to rule out speedtest.net experiencing its usual problems with capacity?

A couple of manual pings to different ip addresses in Ireland should also give you a far better idea of what sort of latency you're seeing over your connection. Generally your best bet is to run a traceroute out to anywhere and then try pinging one of the hops that you see inside the smart telecom network.

    +1 to that.

Oddly enough it's the Digiweb hosted speedtest.net server that's causing the problem. It's very strange as Smart Telecom = Digiweb!

I tried to Fastcom's server in Sligo and got :

My connection's advertised speed is 10mbit/s down 512kbps up.

    To Northwest Electronics in Derry
