Not always, a lot of societies like to head out to the pub/mantra after meetings so they meet up on Mon/Wed/Thurs.

Thanks! I was told it was on Tuesdays and Thursdays between those times, but never thought to ask where! I'll check it out on Tuesday. :D

I've found that the societies seem pretty well spread out over the four days of the week, and most seem to have two events at least. It's probably pretty feasible to make at least one event a week for whatever you join. :)

Does anyone know if there is a Clubs & Societies notice board or something? I have heard of some things already having the sessions and meet ups on, but I have only gotten 1 out of 7 emails.

Just so people know, jiu-jitsu is great craic. Went to it yesterday and it was savage.

Spent an hour or so learning techniques, locks and holds and stuff, and the proper way to fall down (harder then it sounds).

The, for the last 10 minutes, we were paired up with the advanced people. I got my ass kicked by a girl who was about 5 foot tall and probably weighed less then my English books

I'm interested in learning some form of martial arts of self defense, and I'm 'athletically challenged'?

    Any suggestions on Clubs?

There's fencing, if you want to try something different, which I think is on 8-10 on mondays and wednesdays.

Or, there's self defence on wednesdays, 8-10, which is €2 a lesson (you learn more then your moneys worth)

I think it's technically Kenpo which is on Wednesday nights, but it's still self defence like :D

Oh and JDR, if you're going to training you'll meet my friend Jessie ^_^ She's president of the Self Defence club :)

I don't think i'll be going to the wednesdays. I want to give Fencing a try, and it's on the same time as the self defence:(

Forget whatever I said about Fenvcing looking to be a nice sport. I went there thie evening, and no joke, I cannot walk. Not the nice kind of "Oh what a workout", the bad "Why does my body hate me so much?"

I would stick to it, but seeing as it clashes with self defence, I'm picking option B instead.

Maybe, but there was like 50 boxers, so even if I knew who you were, I probable still wouldn't have seen you. You should try jiu-jitsu though, it is great craic.

Was this at fencing? I'm one of the seniors (the ginger one) There didn't seem to be any more of a warm up than what any other club would do... Tonight was tougher alright but thats just because people probably havent exercised those leg muscles that much before. It was hard for everyone, not just beginners :o

It wasn't the muscles, it was the breathing...my muscles are in top form I'll have you know! I chose fencing because I thought I'd be able to keep fit without much running or crazy **** like that...how wrong I was...:P

Maybe keep it up but do a little light jogging in the evenings, might help build up your lungs! thats what I do!! :)

I have problems with my ankles and, you know, being a lazy git, so instead of doing like all the mad people sprinting on the treadmill, set the speed to just before jog and go for 4-5km. It still gets your heart beating and builds muscle. Usually take 30-40mins with a few spurts of running thrown (5mins fast walk, 2.50run, 7 mins fast walk, 2 mins run, repeat)

I can use the treadmill to show you how unfit I am! I managed a speed of...about 6.7 for ten minutes, then I nearly died =P No running, just no running...for various reasons I wouldn't like to post here =P

Then start slow and build up from there.

And, an entertaining thing to look out for, while your walking at a comfotable pace going for some distance, watch how many people go to the treadmills, go flat out, and then fail after 4 minutes and walk for another 5 then give up. While you get 4 or 5 km of exercise, they get less then 1 and are wrecked afterwards.

I was actually just thinking about this yesterday. I'd be up for being involved if one got going.

Cool. Me and one of my other mates were thinking of setting one up. How do we go on about doing this.

PM me your bank account details and I will start investing.

Or we could start a society up, whack a poster or two up and have a meeting to see who would be interested. I'm sure an economics lecturer would take an interest in it. Think it takes a year before you can officially be recognised/ratified as part of the student's union though. Aengus/Rob will know better.

Head into the main Students' Union office and pick up a Societies Application Form. The Marys should also be able to answer any further questions you have.

There isn't a form to fill out, more like a list of things you need to do to become a recognised society.

I recommend emailing societies@nuimsu.com, and the societies' officer should be able to help you out. Lydia was a great help when I was trying to set up a society last year.

Anyone here play with the rugby club? Thinking about joining, but I've barely played it competively at all. Also, the website looks a little out of date, any contact info. would be lovely.
