With the exams out of the way I will be making an attempt today to lower my 5'56 for the mile.

I'm going to update this table. Ran a 5'48 mile today with a pacemaker in front of me. 8 seconds better than my previous best. This is probably my limit right now without specific training. Once I get to Australia in 3 months time I'll start to work towards improving this time, but for now I'm quite pleased with that run.

I just watched this again and I actually think it is insulting to the sport at the elite level that somebody could think he could just walk off the street at the age of 40 and after 1 years training run a sub 4 minute mile. A bit off topic with regards this thread but it seems the general public have no idea on earth how good the likes of Coghlan, Flynn, Cram, Coe etc were because if they did you wouldnt see things like this.

Fair play to him getting sub 5 though. He did seem to have a big setup in place though (getting the opportunity to run with top athletes etc) which had to have made it easier. How many of the average joe would get that opportunity?
i found he was insulting the sport also..... it would be like me turning up at augusta with my golf clubs and asking tiger woods does he think i could beat his record round there!

I'd love to put my name down for this but I think it'd be a bit premature as I'm still in my comeback stage and it would probably be a good few months before I could even attempt to do the training that would be needed for this. But I know I have to ability to do it and I'm still young so I might come back in a few months and put my name down then.

Exactly! Couldnt have put it better myself! It would also be like me stepping into the ring with Manny Pacquiao and thinking I could beat the living sh1te out of him, off a few months training having never been in a boxing bout in my life before that.

Elite athletes dont get anywhere near enough respect in this country.

wow, that'll be some running dangermouse. Good to see a lad with high ambitions. With a 1:21 600m, you should definitely go sub 2 for the 800m.
    Whats your 400m pb?

    Hey lads

Given that we are in indoor season and people will start to look towards this goal over the next while i thought i would revive this thread.

So how is everyone been getting on?

What kinda training was everyone doing over the winter (if any)?

What are the plans in terms of training over the next few months in the build up to the mile attempts?

I'm currently working on a solid winter base while training for Rotterdam :D
Once I get that goal out of the way I plan on doing some sharpening in May & June and put the sub 5 to bed around then.

I'll be working down from 5k to 3k and then finally a good bash at the mile later in the Summer.
Here's some mile races in April if anyone was to lay down a marker.
    12th Apr ALSAA
    20th Apr Wicklow F4L

My 3k last night was 12:57 so I have a lot of work to do between now and July. MacMillan predicts a 3k race time of about 9:54 for a sub 5 mile...

Hi all, sorry to thread bump but I thought I saw a thread on here before about the training for a sub five min mile.

Doing a bit of running at the moment and would like to test myself out.

First of all what kind of warm up do lads do for it? i.e. quick jog, stretch mad and then run like hell or what?

Currently running 6k in 27 mins or so and decent enough at the hill runs, all just around me, need to find a straight flat stretch of road to try the mile.

    EDIT: Found it!

A noble goal. Dubh Gheannain's log, called 'Sub 5 Minute Mile' details his quest to do just that.

Keep posting as you make progress, and good luck. Specific training will be necessary - I'd recommend the likes of Daniels Running Formula. And don't start the specifics until you have a sufficient base. Good luck!
