guessing its an intelligence lead operation with regard to Criminal or Dissident activity ( a van was stopped on the quays during the week and 200kg of dope was found )

but only the guards themselves would know the operational reasons behind these S&S.. and they're hardly going to tell all on Boards :)

though it could also be that they are checking up on commercial vehicles that are being used as personal vehicles...

could be that alri even the AA vans and AXA insurance vans where stopped at the check point which made me even more curious as to what was going on,i couldn't really see them up to anything of a criminal nature then again ya'd be surprised
thought some one here would have been stopped and given the reason for stoppage that they could have shared some light on it

Well, gorceries are now considered contraband.
Van drivers will now be hiding the spuds in wheel wells.

Might be checking for green diesel.
that's normally customs isn't it? maybe a cop in the background to supervise.

Actually noticed this on Pearse Street the other day. A green van pulled over by two gardai. When I got closer I noticed it was an old An Post van (with the paint/sticker gone but the outline still showing). The driver (certainly didn't look like an An Post employee) was then handcuffed and escorted down to Pearse Street Garda station.

John Gormless and his decision to enforce age-old motor tax regulation that commercials cannot be used for social and domestic use. I kid you not.

How many cops are wasting their time on this crackdown. Im on the phone, otherwise I'd link the 30 page thread on junkies in the Dublin City forum and also Degsy's thread in Emergency Services on the same issue. Disgraceful waste of garda resources.

Gormley should stick to ordering audits of protestant bats and claiming expenses for supposedly working Xmas and NY Eve.

Thats a nice conclusion that you have jumped to there. Want to back it up?

Let me get this straight, i cannot buy a Berlingo van and use it for social use?

Back in Wales i had a Berlingo and only used it for Social use, preferred a small van to a car. So i can't do this over here?

You can of course. You just have pay for motor (road) tax at the higher 'private' rate. It was always the case, they're just enforcing it now.

The lads over on Motors aren't best pleased:

Its because vans in this country are cheaper than if they have back windows + seats. If you want to use it for private use, you pay the private rate tax.
I find it handy having a van to chuck my surfboard in the back of / get changed in.

Read the article and the quote correctly. Don't jump to the conclusion that the reporter did. I've highlighted it for you.
But the Garda press office said gardai would enforce the law.

"There's been no change in the legislation in regards to the taxation of cars and gardai will continue to enforce the legislation and would encourage all motorists to fully comply with the legislation," a spokesman said.

Gardaí will enforce the law. Just like we enforce all other laws.

Please start enforcing the 'unaccompanied L driver' law.
    Thanks.

Are you honestly trying to tell me AGS always checked van drivers to make sure they weren't using the vehicle for social/domestic use? Seriously? So this sudden crackdown has nothing to do with circulars issued by Gormley's department last month? Thats a bit naïve.

Such as the law that prohibits open dealing and using of heroin in the city centre in broad daylight?

I see no evidence of that particular law being enforced.

I've yet to see anything about it and have not seen any proof that this is why the vans were being stopped.

Maybe you should take a trip to court someday. And besides, there is a thread for that complaint already.
