Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Euro 2016 qualifying

I know qualification for 2012 hasn't even started yet (except for the Faroes and Estonia), but we were talking about this at lunch, and how great it'll be that Ireland will never again fail to qualify for a tournament ()...

With the tournament expanded from 16 to 24 teams, smaller nations get a better chance. But qualification will be a farce. UEFA have confirmed that there will be the 9 group qualifying system (52 teams into 9 groups = 7x6 teams and 2x5 teams).

But where to from there? Top 2 to qualify as well as the best 3rd place, and then all the 3rd places have a play-off? Big teams will secure a top 2 finish with several matches left, essentially nullifying their last double header, and the chances of a big team not making it (à la England in 2008) will be non existant.

I think they'd have been better sticking to the 16 team format.

I'm not bothered too much about it to be honest, I don't think it will take away from the quality of the finals.

For me i'd rather see us go out in those finals than the qualifying no matter how easy they make it to get there,

It will be better for a country like Ireland experience wise and benefit us in the long term.

No it's 2016 alright, 2012 is the last one under the current format

Yup, for a tiny nation, it's amazing how many times different circumstances shoot us in the foot.

No this was only decided a year or so ago and you need more grounds to host it so they put it back to 2016.

About 50% of the continent will be playing in the 'finals',its a joke.

I always found the European Champs too short, im happy with the extra teams... More matches in Tourne's is always welcome.... And i too am sure Ireland will find some devine way of making a bollix of it!
