Mafia 1 Demo graphics messed up

    With all the hype of Mafia 2 and a lot of people saying the original was a very good game, I decided to download the demo for the original Mafia.
    I picked the recommended graphics and new game.
    I also tried setting the graphics to low and that didn't help.
    In the sequence at the start the character on the right hand side of the screen looked all screwy and messed up, like a broken up triangle or something.

    I tried downloading and installing directx 9.0c runtime and that didn't help either.
    I have a 8 year old pc with a geforce 2 mx but it meets the requirements I think.
    Is there anything I can do?
    This game is really old I thought it would be able to play it.
