What Just Happened with Mary Byrne on X Factor

I have to ask, having just watched Mary Byrne on X Factor, why the sound seemed so much lower than Susan Boyle. It just seemed as if her voice didn't reach the levels it should have...and that the TV were perhaps holding back the power she obviously had. Does this mean the first time we've heard the likes of Paul Potts and…

They enhance the sound to suit the tv audience. More importantly, who thinks Katy Perry is hot ?
