Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Went out this afternoon and played with my Ring Flash. Went looking for insects & spiders. Only found very small spiders (only about 1/8" or less) & a few bees.

This Macro Photography takes a bit of getting used to, it's not that easy.

Anyway here are a few of today's efforts. Need to practice a bit more yet but it's a start.

All taken with 105mm f2.8 VRII Macro with Ring Flash. Most are at 1/60th & f22

Sweet jesus could you not have put a warning about the spiders or something in the title!

    Nice.

Been shooting garden bugs a lot lately myself, mostly without flash - unless it's pretty dark then only using on-board fill flash - I have a flash gun on it's way from the bay ... whenever that gets here.

must look into getting a cheap ring - how much did it set you back? what make/model?

Hmm...the difficulty with macro for me has always been having to use a very wide aperture. A ring flash you say...hmmm. How much was it?

Caban, when you say ring flash, i assume you mean the ring add on that connects to your flash gun, and not the LED (constant light) ones?

Pretty sure this is the one Caban got

    here

remember seeing it in another thread here recently...

These are great, are they hand held or tripod. I see you used a shutter speed of 1/60 on one I checked. At that speed without the tripod I get camera shake. Does the ring flash mean that you can hand hold. Mind you I thought you had monstrous spiders in Australia!
This one was on the wall in my living room on Friday evening.

Coolmoose is correct. It is one very similar to that just with a different brand name on it. I picked it up on my way home in Hong Kong. I think it was about €70 in with a bunch of stuff. I was looking at one of those fibre optic or LED one's and was told that I would probably be disappointed with the results. The cheaper ones were about €20 or €30. I am glad I spent the extra.

Yes they are taken at 1/60th as the main illumination was from the Flash. I had the Aperture at about f22. The shutter speed was to allow some ambient light into the shot. I did try some slower but they were too soft to use. These shots were all hand held, manual focus. Rocked back & forth to get the subject into focus.

We do get larger spiders in the warmer months. At the moment it is cold, down to about 6 degrees at night and not getting much about 16 - 20 degrees during the day.

Found one on ebay [Nikon fit] for €80 with free P&P -

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Macro-Ring-Flash-Delta-DRF-14-N-NIKON-D40-D60-D90-/180429165462?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_CameraFlashUnits_JN#ht_5298wt_1042

Bookmarked. I'll see if I can sell a few bits to buy one :) Would be cool to have for the coming Autumn/Winter months.

That seems a good price. It's about what I paid plus some P&P. There may be some duty duty on that as it comes from Hong Kong but still good value.

Love the pics. Scared the crap out of me though, the spiders are too big for my liking :(

The thread title is a bit suggestive though :p

These spiders are actually tiny. The largest one would be about 1/4 inch. Looking forward to the bigger ones coming out later in the year.

Really?? Now whatever could you mean? ;)

Though the ring flash is still on my list for my longer lens, I gave the 52mm reverse ring adapter for my 50mm a whirl today - Pretty nifty alright -

I'm awaiting a strobist flash gun, it's currently in customs ... I have to give the postie €13 to release it to me on Weds. I'll have to re-think buying anything bigger than a filter from Hong-Kong in future.

Will see how that works out with the longer lens before definitely thinking on one of these ring jobbies.
