Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Flash is absolutely useless. Trust me. Oh, by the way, if you need a home for that flash... ;)

It's a real cheapy one :D Call it a tester, as I really don't know how much I'll use it.

If I have fun using it I will consider going for something better at a later date.

Strobists seem to think it's fine on Flickr:

Hi - saw some clicks to my blog from this so I thought I'd chime in...

I'm sorry, but it's incredibly apparent there's a flash being used in that. It leaves a huge difference between the natural light and the strobe - Which is a look I hate!

Yes it's apparent that flash is in use in that photo... in my defence, that was taken during a workshop I was giving to show how to use gels and white balance to create colour contrast on a dull day. It's a look many hate I'm sure, but the point was to show that look.

Some links from my site that might appeal more (or maybe not!)

A more subtle flash shot (I think) from the same day is here:

    http://www.ronanpalliser.ie/blog/2010/07/05/my-first-workshop/ (2 flashes)

BTW I saw reference to a softbox, and the Lastolite Ezybox Hotshoe for flash is great and gives lovely (subtle, if you wish) light.

An example of on-camera flash, bounced: http://www.ronanpalliser.ie/blog/2010/05/17/bounced-flash-portrait/ (1 flash)

It need not always be about shooting people of course - taking interior architecture-type photographs can almost require the use of flash if you're not at exactly the right time of day: http://www.ronanpalliser.ie/blog/2010/01/29/flash-lit-friday-lighting-a-hallway/ (4 flashes)

It's all about learning to control the variables - aperture, shutter speed, ISO, flash power and flash-to-subject distance.

Get comfortable with those and you can create the exact look you are after, be it subtle or over-the-top or anywhere in between.

Nothing to be afraid of :)

I'd highly recommend http://www.strobist.com for the basics (Lighting 101 as opposed to the flickr groups), and http://www.joemcnally.com/blog for TTL off camera flash as starters for those looking at it.

    Hope that helps

    Ronan
