Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Need some help,

I have been looking through some of the threads with great interest but really none the wiser.

    - He cycles a few miles to railway station each day, nothing extreme, but risk of being robbed.
    - He does like to do some longer cycles, 20-25km every now & again with his dad. Reckon this is something he will keep up, but can't see him getting too competitive
    - But he also like cycling over the rough & down steps.

Is there anything that will cover all of that??

I went to Rothar but found it hard to visualise what they might look like after being done up. Plus I haven't a clue what I'm talking about

I also looked at CRC as a number of people seem to suggest some good offers, this one seems like good value, would I be right??

    GT Timberline : http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=43245

I was looking at spending a max of €400 (including extras)

    Thanks

It seems to me from reading your post that the vast majority of your son's bike riding seems to be on road so you should forget about mountain bikes (especially since a 276e mountain bike isn't going to be that great off road anyway).
What you need is a hybrid, 700c (28 inch) wheels, slick tyres for road use (no knobbies), light weight and as little suspension as possible (preferably none, unless you're spending serious money it's no more than a gimic).

I'd be looking for something along the lines of this:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/globe/vienna-2-2010-hybrid-bike-ec019553 It's not fabulous in any sense but it looks pretty sensible to me. Maybe a bit too sensible looking for a 13 year old, this one looks cooler:

Also, I should point out that I don't have personal experience with either of those bikes so I can't vouch for either of them 100% but they tick most of the boxes you seem to need to tick while staying in budget.
