Basically, each class is worth 5 credits (a rare few are 10 but you won't have any of those just yet I'm guessing). Typically in a year you take 60 credits worth of classes, which is 12 for the year. Most people have 6 classes in the first semester and 6 in the second. In order to graduate you have to have a certain amount of credits (for arts it's 180 for example, or 240 if you're doing an international degree).
