Wanted: 39 tooth track ring for ultegra crank

building a bike from scratch, has anyone got a 39 tooth track ring for a shimano ultegra crank? i wanted to change the crank completely for a vintage one but cant get the bloody thing off the bike!! Has anyone got a spare one they dont mind parting with?

I've a dura-ace one (from the 9 speed group-set that preceeded the 7800 series). Bit worn but free to collect if you want it. (I'm based outside Balbriggan).

Honestly don't know its a double 7600 series I think. I'm sure some one here will know.....

39t is a very small chainring for a singlespeed/fixed setup. What gearing are you planning on running?

Nah, he needs a 39t chainring for a ultegra triple (6503) crankset. I'm helping him put it together. Not sure it'll work though, the regular chain doesn't fit the 16t cog on the fixie wheel. Anyone have any ideas? Also is there any procedure for putting track wheels onto a racer. The wheels are obviously 110mm space but the racer is 130mm I think. Would spacers do it?

Cog could be 1/8", chain 3/32"

What kind of monstrosity are you building here? Does the frame have horizontal dropouts for a start?

Most track hubs would be 120mm. Is this an old set of wheels? You could put on spacers if the axle was long enough. Chainline could be way off though.

hows a going lads, havent had a chance to get back onto this... Well basicly i got a free racing frame off adverts because ive wanted a fixie for a while.

i got my hands on good condition second hand fixie wheels and bought a few parts off the internet but i havent a clue how to make it up, i was told by sexpot to try and get a 39 tooth chainring because we cant get the crank off.. I'd love to bring it to a bikeshop and have them build it up but i havent any money left at all... its all gone into the bike, so im trying to build it myself now and its not coming together at all for me...

That frame appears to have vertical dropouts (hard to tell from the photo). If so it's impossible to make it a fixed wheel (no means of tensioning the chain*). It could be run single-speed using a chain tensioner.

*OK, you might get lucky and find a gear ratio that will work (for a while) but there would be a bit of trail and error involved.

After reading up on fixies i reckon im going to go for maybe 44/16. because i already have the rear cog.

Ok.. you can use that frame but it will be messy, to get the chaintension right you will need to use a magic gear, basically a front and rear teeth number combination that will keep a chain tight when the correct length.
The easiest way to get the chain the correct length is using a half link chain(the chain is made up of links half the length of usual length) they generally arent too expensive.
It will be a matter of getting preferably loans of chainrings and trying different lengths of a chain to see if it will sit tight.
Plus if you want to get the cranks off you will need a crank remover(depending on how old the cranks are)
