Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Standard Music Replaces Radio in Shops?

I've noticed over the past few weeks that most shops I go into seem to be playing a standard playlist of pretty average pop songs instead of a radio station.

The shops I've noticed so far are Supervalu, Argos, Dunnes Stores, Hotels (all in Galway).

Is there a reason that this has happened?

TBH I'd not have radio playing in the background either.

How crap would it be if you were in Dunnes and all you heard every 15 mins was an ad for Tesco ;)

Point taken... but what station plays ads for Tesco every 15 minutes? ;)

One of the shows on one of the stations during one time or another (:D) were sponspored by Tesco. Can't for the life of me remember what it was but anyways..

On a side note, if I walked into a shop and heard Tony Fenton with 'aaalllright guys...' I'd pretty much run out of that shop. But thats me :pac:

I think the reason for this maybe to do with the amount that shops etc have to pay for playing music. Normally shops have to pay IMRO and PPI (yes both!) but there is a company who supply piped music (which is pretty dire normally) and their fee includes the music and the rights fee so you don't have to pay PPI or IMRO.

I think many of the supermarket chains have their own "stations" though. Usually fed over satellite to the various locations.

Shops playing a playlist of current pop songs is nothing new, back in the 70s there was a service where big department stores and supermarkets used a leased phone line to get this music from a service provider, there was at least one such service in Dublin, not sure about Cork, Limerick etc.

My mother works in Garvey's in Listowel, she said that they were required to pay royalties (probably to the PPI) for "regular" music. So they now feed in royalty free music which apparently is crap, though I haven't heard it.

TBH there's great peace to be had shopping in places with no radio/music, usually the likes of Aldi/Lidl.
Anytime I'm in the local Tesco they either have piped re-issues of pop stuff (past pop hits sung badly by another performer) or some of the staff have their own crap playing. Can't recall the last time I heard radio in a shop...maybe some indie newsagents from a portable set...
