thanks for that - does the sata 2 not use a different power cable than the sata one? the drive i pulled from my machine has a ide power connector with the 4 pins.

The clear/white ones are molex, on ebay for about 2 euro if your motherboard needs one.

Some earlier sata 1 drives had molex power, sata power, and the data connection.
This drive will most likely only have sata power and data, so you might need that cable above.

It depends on what cables or connections your motherboard has.
If it takes sata though, it should have sata power cables too.

I have the exact cable you'd need here I can post it to you if you like. (Free - I've no use for it.)
