Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Lads, my Europa is gone horrifically slow. Every now and then it tells me that the memory is almost full.

Now on my external (SD) card there is still 3.5GBs available.

How can I transfer stuff to this, and is it possible to downlaod directly to the external memory?

    thanks

howya? Have been trying to upgrade mine on and off for ages now. Tried the guides above and a couple of different others but every time I think its sorted with all the appropriate codes filled in and hit start a box pops and tells me to "Check image files!". My head is wrecked trying to work out whats going wrong, and also with poxy meteor not just giving us the upgrade for free across Kies. Any ideas on how to sort it?

You should be able to get the meteor upgrade across keis for free. When i updated to 2.2 on mine it just poped up in keis

I just got one of these Europa's (I have no interest in expensive phones and this seemed like a handy price for a vaguely well featured phone), but I've really been getting annoyed by the tiny on screen keyboard.
Is there any way to plug in a USB keyboard? Or is there bluetooth models that work? It'd be dead handy for typing out long posts that would otherwise cause me to end my life prematurely.

I found the 3x4 keypad much easier to use on the europa. Its layed out like the number pad on a normal phone rather than the qwerty keypad. Just hit the settings button to the left of the space bar to change it.

    simple solution...

bite the bullet and learn how to use the SWYPE function...takes some getting used to and isnt perfect, but its the best method of typing on a phone ive ever come across

You can also use alternative keyboards - I have been using the gingerbread keyboard downloaded from here https://market.android.com/details?id=com.moo.android.inputmethod.latin.free&hl=en
Settings allow you to increase size of keys and other tweaks to allow the fatter fingered amongst us i.e. me, to text quite speedily.
also for longer pieces of text I use chrome2phone to type text on computer and then send it to phone to be pasted where I need it.

Cheers for the responses, however they're not the solutions I'm hoping exist.
I spend a lot of time on buses, but I also write for a games news site. I'd like to be able to write long posts and update the site while on these buses.
No matter how efficient Swype is or how handy Gingerbread's increased button sizes are, a 2.8inch screen is not designed for typing long batches of text. Specifically what I'm looking for is if it's possible to plug in an external keyboard of some sort into the phone.
My laptop is too bulky (and is so old it has an uncharagable battery) for convenient bus use and I can't afford a netbook at the moment.
    Cheers again :)

So, have this phone on 3, updated through Kies to Froyo, even though the phone froze during the update, I did an "emergency firmware recovery" and got 2.2 installed. Noticed a bit of improvement on battery life, but that lasted for about a week before the battery was back to it's old usual bad self. Phone acts quite slowly now, opening text messages is a nightmare, also kind of annoyed with all the extra stuff installed by 3 with 2.2, like the bebo app and all those. So gonna try rooting it as instructions above and see how it goes.

Try installing juice defender to see if your battery life improves.

Thanks guil, installed fine, and already an improvement on the version released by 3, in that I can save text messages as drafts!

Does anyone know how to add a ringtone on this phone. I have sent ringtones from one phone to this phone via bluetooth and cannot find an option to make a ringtone on the Europa.

Just a heads up, a recent update of Google Maps has enabled Streetview on the Samsung Europa, full 360 degrees, zoomable and dragable Streetview. See below.

    europastreetview.jpg

Very impressive for such a humble phone.

You can tap anywhere to activate the zoom frame, or move 'Pegman', or simply tap further up the street, to move along the 3D view.

You can zoom in to buildings of interest, just like on the desktop, nothing is limited\crippled.

The central 'D Pad' on the phone also works like a joystick, it will stay in place, but move your view about, much like turning\tilting your head, up, down, left, right etc..

Does anyone know how to add a ringtone on this phone. I have sent ringtones from one phone to this phone via bluetooth and cannot find an option to make a ringtone on the Europa.

Click on the 'My Files' icon.

Click on Home. (if you're not already there..)

(The button is upper left corner when phone is held portrait, in your hand.)

    Click on 'Media' folder icon.

    Click on 'Ringtones' folder icon.

If the above folder does not exist, create it.

Dump your .mid or .mp3 files there.

You may need to reboot your phone.

    ---

So, to recap, your folder structure for dumped Ringtones should look like this:

    /mnt/sdcard/Media/Ringtones

    ---

    Click on Settings.

    Click on Sound.

    Click on Phone Ringtone.

Your dumped Ringtones should be listed there...

    ---

    EDIT

For 'Notifications' (SMS), I have media files here..

    /mnt/sdcard/Media/Audio/Notifications

I don't know if that's really needed, but somehow that's how I have it.

All classic Nokia tones, I can't get rid of the Nokia SMS notification sound, it's with me for life.. ;)

Thanks very much, Amalgam. Got it sorted just as you explained. Unlocked it last night via Fastgsm. Had a little problem with the Samsung Client App not reading the phone's software. So I emailed them with the the problem. They were back within an hour with the unlock code:).I had already got it by then myself, but it is nice to know they respond quickly. Good value indeed for 20 dollars.Better value of course for the posters who got it unlocked for half that:).

I looked into installing a mod instead of a clean version of the firmware when I wiped a few days ago, but honestly found the madteam website a bit confusing to navigate, and in the end couldn't see the point of using a mod. What are the advantages?

On a side note, phone working much better since I wiped, and battery lasting longer since I installed JuiceDefender!

You can get very good cases & protective screen stuff on www amazon.co.uk. I have ordered from them. A lot of the stuff has free delivery in the UK, so if you have a contact there, it may be of help.

Shadow, that's only an option in 2.2 not 2.1 AFAIK. I've sorted it by setting up a fake APN :D

Only problem now is in relation to playing AVI's . Tried Rockplayer but even in software mode it won't play AVI's on this phone. The manual confirms only 3gp and mp4 file formats are supported so it looksLooks like I'll have to convert everything to mp4 in order to play them on this phone  I thought Samsung phones were renowned for playing all sorts of formats.

    Ben

Bit late, but QQPlayer works great for me.

If youtube is slow its probably a network issue, download the speedtest.net app and run it see what kinds of dl speed your getting. Also try using youtube over wifi if possible. This phone isn't that bad speed wise, for a budget phone. Although I havn't had it on stock for a while (unofficial Cyanogenmod 7 Gingerbread is available for it)

    Hi yoyo,

Have you a link to the CM7 ROM for this? My wife has one and could use a refreshing. Also will this ROM help with downloading apps usually unavailable fro the app store to her?

Unless you've modified the build.prop in some way, once Google Play see you as having a Europa, the screen resolution (320x240) is a big decider if an app is available to you or not.. nothing will change that.

Still using my Europa with stock 2.2. Love the size mainly. A phone you can tuck away in the palm of your hand.. discreet.

I installed CM7 and CWM Bootloader yesterday from XDA. It's running great so far and it looks much better in 2.3.7.

No. I still cannot download certain apps such as Adobe Flash Player etc.
