Ronnie O'Sullivan has today pulled out of the first ranking tournament of the new season The Shanghai Masters which starts on Monday due to a back injury.
Ken Doherty must play a Chinese wild card in a pre lim round and if he wins will play Graeme Dott in the first round proper.

Incidently O'Sullivan will play in the first round of matches in the Premier League on Sky tonight.

    What about the back injury?????

The O'Sullivan story was pulled down from the WSA site after a couple of hours - So he might still be going, we will have to wait and see, he either changed his mind or Barry changed it for him.

Ken plays Mohammad Sajjad from Pakistan in the prelim round. Mohammad is a good player and recently won the Korat Cup which is a big title in Thailand, in which many UK pro's play in. Ken should win handy however, hopefully!

Best of luck also to Joe Delaney (Dublin not Wexford), Joe plays Li Yan for the chance to play Mark King. Li Yan is one of China's top juniors and impressed in Letterkenny recently at the World Under-21's.

Hopefully the latter. If he withdrew of his own accord, and shows up on Sky, then I really give up.

He did this a couple of years ago too, for the very same event. I think i read that he was complaining about the prize money and it's not worth it for hom to show up.

Pity...As he is a big name over there, The Chinese love him

Well it's official, O'Sullivan has withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters and not due to a sore back.
My pal in the WSA said a statement was recieved from Ronnie this morning citing personal reasons as the reason behind his withdrawl, apparently his statement mentioned that he wanted to 'spend some time with his young family'.
He also apologised to the chinese fans and hoped he would be back playing in the next event The World Open in Scotland.

The cheque from BSkyB was bigger then I presume?

What a complete let down for the fans there, he should be disqualified for the rest of this seasons ranking events imo. The rest of the players are busy trying to promote the game, develop MORE ranking events, bigger worldwide coverage, better prize money & an all over more modern view on the game...and here's the games most popular player picking and choosing what events he goes to. Family my arse, the season has only started...or has he got a new baby??
