Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Confirmed Atheist Mick Lally had his funeral service today.
I think it was a nice service and if I ever make the decision to defect I'd like a service like it.

TV3 incorrectly refrerred to is as 'mass' but their hardly the bastions of news accuracy

Funny, there was no mention of his atheism in the press I read. No surprise, I suppose.

Mary McEvoy mentioned it in an interview.

He said it himself in Miriam Meets- the whole interview is worth a listen

They mentioned it on Morning Ireland during the week also.

Does anyone know where this interview can be found? Was it a TV or a radio interview? Mick Lally=Legend. Finding out that Mick Lally was also an atheist just increases my respect for the man. We won't see his like again.

It was an excellent interview on RTE radio 1, recently I found most of Miriam Meets to be poor but this was excellent, Mick and Mary made it. It's bound to be repeated this Sunday at 10:00am (I think) on radio 1. If not it should be still on podcast, checkout the rte.ie site.

Linky-ish should be something like this.

    pod-v-070310-51m17s-miriammeetslallyandmcevoy.mp3

    RIP Mick.

Nice one. I found it. http://www.rte.ie/radio1/podcast/podcast_miriammeets.xml You have to scroll down to the 7th March 2010 podcast, that is the one and then right click and save it.

He was an atheist? Good thing my granny never found out, she'd have been devastated!

Why would it increase your respect for him? Sure, one's religion or lack of shouldn't matter what kind of man he/she is.

I went to Secondary with his son who was a hell of a nice bloke... My sympathies to the whole family. RIP

I recall Mick Lally was on the Late Late within the last year and talked about his lack of religiosity.

Thanks for the link. I was never a big fan of his acting, but from that interview, he seems to have been a very decent guy. 64 is to young to die. I don't know anything about his family but I'm guessing he'll miss weddings, grandchildren etc.

So Mick believed there is no God, he knows now for sure, I wonder did he get a wake up call?

The fact that he was publically unashamed to declare it, discuss it and defend it. There are many atheists in public life who are unwilling to admit it and discuss it because of the bad PR that it would bring.

Although, he was in an ideal profession to do such a thing - I know a lot of actors, and though they're creative and spiritual and floopy and the like, many if not most of them are unconvinced or apathetic about the God question. Their belief rarely, if ever, have an impact on their work or their ability to get work. Other public figures, such as politicians or broadcasters can't say the same thing.

I hadn't been aware that he was an atheist before he died and I read the news reports of his death and how he had unashamedly spoken of his atheism in the past. I always have a lot of respect for public figures who will stand up and speak out for atheism, regardless of any consequences it might have for their popularity. The obverse of that is, when I see someone like Kaka, the brazilian footballer, making very public, pious declarations of his belief in the purportedly magic Jew, I tend to lose respect for him, and definitely like him a lot less.

He was also a socialist, and even canvassed on behalf of Joe Higgins a few years ago. Will that be held up as a beacon for socialist ideals by the same people who hold up the fact that he was atheist as a beacon for what that means?

There's a thing about humanity. They respect in others what they see in themselves. Me? I'm not much of a one for politics, so it has no bearing. Others will agree with him strongly and be impressed more.

Others will disagree with him, but respect him for again, being outright in his beliefs. I'd hope there aren't many though who disagree with him on this, and hold it against him but respect him for being outright on his religious views.

That'd be inconsistent. But then, I've learned consistency is a rarity. People are fallible. And gullible too which is to be seen by how widespread religion is.

Did Tubbers actually treat him with respect and a reasoned discussion?? Poor old Dawkins.

The Herald on friday described him as an "atheist and anti-catholic"

anti organised religion i think would have been more to the point, saying he was anti-catholic makes it sounds like he didn't like catholics, which in this country wouldn't go down too well

I'm not sure the point of the question...

Mick Lally was a bit of an Irish institution. It's only of interest to this forum that he openly rejects that other Irish institution where the members wear robes and preach morals they don't follow.

I very much doubt it. I am still traumatised by the interview Tubridy did with Dawkins last year. It was cringeworthy, he made a total ass of himself.

My point was that while people respect him for holding one set beliefs on religion, that those same people may not respect him for holding another set of political beliefs. We're all individuals after all and just because people differ on some issues doesn't mean that they're any less respectable or deserving of the freedom to hold those beliefs

I digress, it has nothing much to do with this forum, and there's no reason why people shouldn't respect him simply for being irreligious.

There's equally no reason to respect him for simply being irreligious.
That's like saying I respect people who say the bleeding obvious

My uncle was cremated in the same crematorium in Clondalkin. I think its a great place. I'm catholic myself but would prefer to give my money to my kids than pay for a needless plot of land.

If I had to choose to watch Tubridy or Dawkins. Dawkins would win every time.

Can't stand Tubridy, Don't agree with all of Dawkins views, but atleast he can talk and reason an opinion.
