On the way into town just up from the 5 lamps is a very old building. nearly looks like a stately home. anyone know what its called or what its history is? looks a bit odd and out of place.

IMRO sells Portland Row HQ for €4.5m
Sunday, May 15, 2005 - By Neil Callanan
The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) has completed the sale of its headquarters on Portland Row in Dublin city centre.

Aldborough House is a three-storey over basement Georgian-style mansion which was originally built in 1793 as a beach house.

The building sold through CBRE Gunne for around €4.5 million and was bought by a developer, whose name has not been revealed. Aldborough House was the last great townhouse to have been built in Dublin city centre and in the past has been occupied by a school, a barracks, the Post and Telegraphic Service and Telecom Eireann. IMRO paid €3.81 million for the property at the end of 1999.

The mansion has an ancillary theatre and gate lodge, and in total has a gross floor area of 2,498 square metres on a site of 1.16 acres. The house is zoned Z5, “to consolidate and facilitate the development of the central area and to identify, reinforce, strengthen and protect its civic design character and dignity'‘.

Potential uses include education, media recording, medical and related consultants, offices, residential and training. It is believed that there is development potential to the side and rear of the property. An office/storage extension of around 217 square metres has already been built on the site.

The house is close to the Five Lamps junction on Amiens Street, Connolly station, the IFSC and the city centre. The building qualified for capital allowances for costs incurred on new building and refurbishment under the integrated area plan for the north-east inner city but these have now expired, although the developer has the option of reapplying for them. There are 90 car spaces available at the site.
