Gave this another hour today, the outside levels after the casino are pretty dodgy... I have not seen pop-up like that in a recent game.

Its fun enough I guess, first boss... was it a boss? Was pretty poor, I was looking for some creative way to kill him and as it turned out the shotgun was enough.

Which boss was that and which level?

I thought it was only possible to kill bosses with explosives.

Yes, just looked at a walkthrough... was not a boss. Last part of 'Lady Killer'... big flying guy, shoots rockets at you.

I don't think there are any bosses in that level. Trust me, you meet a boss in DNF - with the exception of the very first one which isn't actually meant to be a challenge - and you know about it. Some of them are really, really freakin hard, before you work out how exactly what to do. Funny enough, it peaked at the Octaking boss, and then the bosses after that, including the finale, are much easier. The only boss you can kill or even hurt with a shotgun is the enforcer when you're shrunk down...

The biggest problem i have with the game is that, it doesnt even feel like an offroad game.

The cars dont even slide on gravel. They said it was a good balance between arcade and simulation, but its purely arcade which is a shame.

I'm enjoying it, I wasnt expecting a FPS-revolution, just some humour and fun and a slightly dated looking game.

    Meets my expectations :)

i dont think the criticism was unfair at all

if it wasnt a duke game itd have fared worse

Good to see The Duke back, i'm getting a laugh out of hearing Dukes one-liners, but its starting to get old.
I rented it and started a single player on hard. Bad idea. Load times are atrocious. If you die (which i have a lot), it takes at least 30-40 seconds to restart from the checkpoint.

I so want that 'balls of steel' trophy you get from getting a high score on the pinball.

But it really doesnt deserve scores of 2 or 3/10. Its a perfectly serviceable shooter. Its not a great game, its passable, but a 3/10 would be a score id reserve for a game thats so broken its unplayable

Alone in the Dark for example.

And is that enough? Games are 45-55 euro a go, that's outside of the cost for these "next gen" consoles themselves. I think it's reasonable to ask that in an industry second only to Film in terms of budgets, that the 50euro equates to a polished, high-quality, well-design game. DNF is none of those things.

Oh and yes, with the loading times problem I would argue that for a great many people the game is unplayable.

That argument doesn't hold up in reality though, pretty much every new game will be in that price range, it doesn't matter if it's crap or not.

But if thats the case, then it really is being unfairly savaged, when you think of homefront scoring 6/10, a game that had only 4 hours of a campaign and a broken multiplayer.

why is it that pc games are so much cheaper anyway, I paid about 30 euro for the balls of steel edition and all the goodies I got with it mean that even though the game ended up one of the worst I've played in years.. I'm still kinda happy with the purchase.
Still grin whenever my gaze catches the bust of duke nukem I have sitting on my desk :D

surely a game that's so broken it's unplayable should get the worst possible score, not a score higher than that?

thats the problem with review scores these days. 5 should be an average game, 0 being something like you mention above, and 10 being a must buy that has the potential to change the genre or gaming scene forever

I just think the whole /10 review system is a joke at this stage. Id totally agree a 5 is an average game, 0 is the worst of the worst, etc, yet nowadays if anything scores less than 8 its automatically "uh oh...must be crap"

Nice write up Chairman Meow. I haven't played it but I agree with what you are saying although I can't agree with you smiling at "If I told you I would kill you last I lied". No problem taking lines from movies but ruining said lines so they don't even work anymore? If I told you.. If?

But if thats the case, then it really is being unfairly savaged, when you think of homefront scoring 6/10, a game that had only 4 hours of a campaign and a broken multiplayer.

It had 4 hours of a decent sub-CoD campaign and although multiplayer was broken (and has now been fixed) you could tell that what was there was quality and something original. So a 6/10 was pretty apt being an average of 5/10 singleplayer and 7/10 multiplayer. By all accounts Duke is dire and if it didn't have the character no one would care about it or defend it so. The demo is up for all consoles now too so everyone can see how bad it really is! :pac: As long as you're using the full scale I see nowt wrong with this game getting a 4 or 5/10 compared to others.
