Mount problem

As above, I have to change the rings to 1" for a new scope I got, but to do so I must first remove the bases as they are standard burris mounts and rings. Problem is is that the torx screws are overtightened and I cannot get them opened. I have had the hard luck of breaking 5 torx heads already and to no avail. Is there any tricks or ways of getting these opened other than drilling them out and re-tapping them? All respnses recieved very much appreciated.

How about heating with a hair dryer? The expansion and contraction might 'break the seal'. (that's just a guess btw...I don't have any real experience with that prob) :)

try tightening them a minute ammount if you get any movement soak liberally with penetrating fluid not wd40 and leave for a few hours them try loosening slightly and repeat

I've found heating has worked for me in different circumstances but the principle should be the same.

Regarding heating, I have found the best thing for this kind of situation is one of those miniature blowtorches, they can be got for around €20 euro in cookware shops and are used by chefs to caramelise things.
You can also find them in hardware stores but they are not as common for some reason.
These give a brilliantly precise form of heat that is ideal for heating small areas such as a broken mount screw.
I find mine invaluable for lots of things. Last winter I used it to heat a key before I stuck it in a frozen lock to defrost it.

Thanks for the reply fellas, appreciate it, I had tried everything you said about heating etc and I decided to drill them and take the pressure off. All I need now is the 2 torx screws. Strange size too, must be imperial.

Anyone know where I can get them screws? I checked online but can't find them. They are the ones that go into the mounts and are smaller than the ring screws. Maybe my gun dealer might have a couple to spare. Allen heads be better though for future loosening. They are neither M3 or M5. Maybe imperial?

I have the 1" rings bought mate, just need a pair of torx screws. I'll take a pic when I get the cam and post them. They are the screws that fix the base to the receiver. It's a pain that just 2 screws are stopping me this fine weather from gettin out with it:rolleyes: Thanks for the reply bud. Pics to follow when I take 'em. Found a link with the bases I have. Hope it's of some help Deerhunter. http://www.nightvisionplanet.com/burris-trumount-universal-2-piece-bases-700-rev-re.html

Screws can be got. next time don't super glue the use a milder form of thread lock.
Also invest in a spring loaded impact driver.
    impact-driver.jpg

When I was 16 I spent a 6 months working for a company dismantling motor parts.
The impact driver saved my bacon more times.
It can even loosen rusted screws if used correctly.

I have impact drivers and such. Not many nuts or screws or any type of a fastener fail me as I'm a plumber/pipefitter. These didn't either but needed extra persuasion:D and were useless when I finished with them. I might try Brownells lads, or local gun dealer. It's a sad day if I can;t get Burris mount screws in Ireland:rolleyes:

If you have no luck finding the screws through the gun trade, try a regular engineering fasteners supplier. They will be able to order them in for you. We are always having to get weirdo thread sizes in work - UNF, BA, ANC, NPT blah blah blah.... You'll need to correctly ID the size you need first, measure the diameter of the screw and the pitch of the thread and match as closely as you can to existing thread forms. If you can get hold of a Zeuss chart book all the better, it has just about every threa form ever invented in it.

There is a company in Tullamore that do specialist machine parts and screws. I have not had cause to use them although a few lads with similar problems (cannot find screws, get screws, need special ones made) have used them and were delighted.

If you go into Tullamore and head to the Portarlington road, there is Tesco on one side and Aldi on the other. Depending on the direction you are coming from turn either right or left, down by Aldi and they are at the end of the road.

I cannot remember their name, but i'll get it and post it when i do.

I think so too mate, They are not the ones that hold the rings on, but the ones that hold the bases and they look to be what I'm looking for:) I cant post direct pics as I can't find the usb cord for the cam. I'll pm you my address Deerhunter. Thanks again.

I have heard mixed reports on that Shop you are referring to.
I use there website a lot as a reference for prices.

I only was in it once in 2003 when it was in shop street.

Have to say I bought my Nightforce from that shop and it was very well priced. Other RFDs have even told me so.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,668 ✭✭✭kay 9

I agree with the pricing part as in they are very reasonable but after sale service is less than terrible in my view. No way helpful at all. Others may find them ok though. I have given them alot of custom over the years and no appreciation on it whatsoever.
