    Hello there,

My name is David and I'm about to go into my second year in trinity college - studying science. I thought I'd give my life long summer job of gardening a go from my new home on Ormond Rd. My parents ran a garden centre from our home during my childhood and proceeding this my father began a landscape gardening business for which I have been working every summer (barr one) since I was about 14/15 yrs of age. So firstly on the agenda would be hedge trimming using professional equipment etc. All going well additional services are planned (lawn care, border work etc,). A cheap but proficient service is assured - I only want to make enough money to keep myself "ticking over" as such.

So this is to test the water and to look for any tips or citicisms to help my aspirations of providing myself with food and water through college via gardening! Any questions are welcome! Thanks! :)

how far are you willing to travel?

Unfortunately not too far! Just in the general D6 area(like rathmines ranelagh, rathgar and maybe a liitle beyond) but if anyone throws a job my way that's out of my way I will try my best to find a way to do that job!

I have been exploring different possible modes of transport for my little venture but will not be able to decide on which before I find out what the demand is or lack there of. I've had my full license for nearly two years so I will get a car if needs be. Most likely though I will use a bicycle trailer..so cycling distance is my limit really!:D

The Biggest Problem for you I see is what to do with the "waste" Prunings... if you are serious about this maybe you should get a small Van (Caddy) or at least a Trailer... Believe me Grass cuttings in a car boot is not something you should do!! It Will STINK!

You will look a bit more Professional!... if that matters?

I know you can get a Lawnmower/Mulcher... but you want to start off Hedge cuttings... Lot's of waste Produced.
maybe offer services like planting "winter" Baskets/Pot's

You'd be surprised what can be compessed into a couple of large reusable heavy duty plastic bags (which would be brought to the appropriate dump once enough is collected to warrant a visit) ! I want to crawl before I can walk and spending more money on a van and insurance than what I'd need to sustain me for the year in college isn't worth the risk of not makig a turnover. I hear you on the baskets/pots idea...also edging only requires a spade and skill.

Any other nifty ideas and/or requests are welcome!
I'm just trying to take financial pressure off my parents and earn my way through college and any other advice etc. is most welcome!:)

Would you consider working for a Landscaper/Maintance (Part-time, weekends) and possibly access to his waste disposal for your own odd job's?.. Is your Dad based in Dublin?

Have you ever smelt grass cuttings in a Plastic bag a day after being cut.... ?? (I have done this) Phew!
Where would you store them till they built up for you to justify a trip to the Dump...
where is the nearest dump for D6W ? And how would you get the waste there?

Don't envy you if you plan to Cycle

Well if my dad was based in dublin this would be a no brainer..
I have a large back garden(in my dublin house) in which to store bags..
I do have a car(and trailer) back home which I share with a sibling which I can take for only a few days at a time in which dump trips will be made.

I do think I have most of the basics covered but if there's any other holes you may see please fire away! I'm may be young but I'm not nieve, I know things aren't just easy and I don't mind dropping my idea if it will not work.

I used to run a small thing (mainly grass cutting) with a friend when we were younger...was great fun - so be great to hear how youve gotten on ...was actually looking for some topiary designs - doesnt seem to be much of a specialist art in dublin from what i can see...wil keep looking though!...
