SATA External Hard drive, Can i replace HD with any internal SATA drive

Sorry about the confusing heading! I have a 500gb, 3.5 inch, USB external hard drive (sata). I'm wondering can i buy any 3.5 inch sata drive, say a 1tb or 2tb and place it in my external drive unit? Would I have any problems with general compatibility?

AFAIK you can stick any 3.5" SATA hdd in there.
