Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

ONE/ONE Challenge - Rule of Thirds

The Theme for this ONE/ONE Challenge is Rule of Thirds.

This isn't a rule-of-thirds-and-how-to-break-it. It's a basic rule of thirds challenge to try before breaking it.

    Probably best explained here

    and some examples

    eagle.jpg
    RuleOfThirds-714864.jpg
    IMG_0327.jpg

*Photos must be posted within 1 week of the day the task was set – so the closing time/date is 9pm on Monday 13th September 2010.
*No old photos. Only photos taken with this ONE/ONE CHALLENGE in mind qualify.

Therefore, the photo must be taken after 7 am on the 6th September 2010.
(Please do not hide Exif data).
*Photos must be on the given task.
    *Only ONE photo per entrant.
Most people appreciate constructive criticism – so it is welcome.

The next CHALLENGE is to be chosen by the person who gets the most votes in the Poll.
Voting by way of Poll will commence at 9 pm on Monday 13th September and will last until 9pm on Saturday 18th September with the new Challenge to start the following Monday. You can only vote for ONE Photo in the poll

If I've got the details of the rules can someone let me know and I'll edit the post.

vote for your favourite. voting finishes on Saturday. 39 votes

As this is a relatively new venture and as there are a lot of new people joining day by day - it might be no harm to state the following:

There are currently 2 Assignments /Challenges running side by side

    (1) There is the long running very popular ASSIGNMENT where people can post as many photos as they like and vote(say 'thanks') for as many pics as they like.
The person with the most 'thanks' wins and chooses the next assignment.
This was the last one and there is a new one due to start soon

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056008043

    (2) There is the Newer ONE/ONE CHALLENGE- which is more restrictive insofar as entrants can only enter ONE PHOTO and voters have only ONE VOTE in the poll which starts once closing time for entries has arrived. Again the person with the most votes chooses the next Challenge.
THE ONE/ONE CHALLENGE is currently aimed at slightly more 'technical' aspects of photography - while not being in the least bit 'arty-farty'.

For all photogaphers - I genuinely think that being active in both 'competitions' will contribute hugely to improving skill levels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭Martron

i will never be as good as the some on here. but the more pictures you take the better you get. the floorboards i think were better than the tap though.

    its all about practice.

I had to crop this to get the composition right - is that breaking the rules? I don't know why my nikon has a grid which quarters the view but doesn't divide into thirds, bit annoying!

    B976AA073EF84DE3B3B503F8539F07AD-0000331142-0001912880-00800L-7D8126780DD24F97B983883E05B8F10B.jpg

I can't decide if I like this or not....its certainly the best of the 50 or so shots I took for this challenge though. I think it fails the "would I print it?" test for me so it will be interesting to see what others think.

Cropping is no problem - in fact it's really no holds barred in getting your photo into the image you like.

Normally Nikon allows you to adjust your 'viewfinder grid' - what make of Nikon is it?

BTW I really like the concept of the pic - and can see that a lot of thought has gone into it- well done.

Well, that's good. That said I'm going to make up a new rule for myself - no more photos of bits of my house:) Thanks. W.

Yeah - I must say that I find getting out and about and using 'outdoor' light is much easier and generally produces better photos:)

Thanks. Its a Nikon D90. Just had a quick google and apparently the focus points are roughly alligned along the thirds. I'd prefer the gridlines but not sure where the manual is tbh.

I spent ages taking pictures of coloured toothbrushes, lining them up in various ways, but eventually I went back to a photo taken yesterday.

    Minolta 800si
50mm 1.7 lens (probably at about 2 point something)
    Fuji Neopan 400CN B&W film
    Cropped into a square

just in case of a tie what do we do?

the person who has won the least amount assigns next topic ( including the other assignment) ?

or let either winner decide among themselves?

For future assignments there could be a rule that in the event if a tie, the earliest post wins.

I know that it says the voting is still open but I was supposed to have set the poll so that the voting ended at 9pm so officially the voting has closed (I can't seem to edit it now)

So can I now delcare uns12345 the winner of the Rule of Thirds Challenge with this brilliant picture! 4977502424_9eb5e1b47f_z.jpg

    Well done uns12345!
