Ireland has faced the same amount of attacks from Christian extremists as it has from Islamic extremists.,...

    Erm, ok?
That doesn't change the fact that Ireland is a legitimate target.
Whether we've faced any attacks at all is irrelevant.

Anyway, yer man doing this is a sap.
There's no point behind it other than to demonstrate his hatred for Muslims.

Agreed. This guy does not represent the typical American pastor. The stories of churches reaching out to Muslims don't get played on CNN or MSNBC.

    Media gives him attention.

Other nutjobs begin burning flags in protest.

This has been blown out of all proportion by the media because its sensationalist "news". For every self-aggrandising freak like this fool, there are 100 others who treat muslims well, just like for every kiddy-fiddler in a white collar there's 100 others out helping the homeless etc. but these don't get any coverage 'cos its not sensationalist.

Whether he burns the book or not, his message of hatred has been received loud and clear by the nutjobs on the other side of the world and will simply spur them on to more flag burnings/embassy lootings/soldier stonings etc.

The mayor of Gainesville (whom the church protested against during his campaign because he's openly gay) is holding something of an anti-book burning gathering the day before along with several other churches, synagogues and local religious leaders.

    I can imagine it now...

Piling up books.. standing around looking at them and cheering...

I say that we get a load of Korans, Bibles, American flags, Irish flags, Crescent moon flags and Israelis flags, pile them all up and burn the lot.
Then wave some signs with slogans such as "Go and fúck yourselves, you fúcking lunatics".

This reminds me of the time when the Nazis burned books in Germany.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the Nazis yet.

    <inserts book burning reference>

Muslims would never burn the Bible, they consider it a Holy book in their religion. Islam is a Judeo-Christian in it's roots.

They believe that the Tawrat (Torah) and the Injil (Gospels) are the word of God but that parts of the texts have been corrupted.

Does it matter? They're all as crazy as each other. Islam just takes it one step further by saying 'convert or die'. Lunatics.

    Erm, it kinda does.
"I have been ordered to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity worthy of worship other than Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish the prayer, and pay zakat, and if they do this, then their blood and money shall be protected from me, except by an Islamic right, and their account will be with Allah."

I think that quote needs to be put into context (BTW it's not from the Qur'an). The Qur'an sets out clear rules and outlaws killing of innocent people. Also, "There is no compulsion in religion. True guidance has been made clearly distinct from error. Therefore, whoever renounces ‘Tãghüt’ (forces of Shaitãn) and believes in Allah has grasped the firm hand-hold that will never break. Allah, Whose hand-hold you have grasped, hears all and knows al" - Qur'an 2:256

After the war the allies burned more books during the de-nazification period than the nazis originally did. Book burnings were commonly carried out by communists and even america had book burnings into the 1950's.

Ya, I don't agree with destroying books. I was just being facetious or something. Still though at the end of the day it is a book. I know what it symbolises to people of faith. I think people ought to take less offense to this type of behaviour, if they did they would be untouchable.
A flag is also just a load of material and dye. What it means to destroy a flag or a book and get offended by it is far less offensive than killing or maiming a person over.

The Qur'an sets out clear rules and outlaws killing of innocent people.

'Innocent' has a highly perverted meaning in religion, and it's only in extremely religious nations will you see people being executed for atheism and adultery. Abrahamic texts define an appalling number of 'crimes' which are punishable by death.

    Absolutely, 100% batsh!t crazy.

That's just it. They are just symbols.
It's like someone saying I believe in the American flag/ Koran/ Bible/ whatever inanimate object. I believe in them too. I've seen these things and I know that they exist, but they only inanimate objects, and their burning will not cause any physical harm to any Muslims (apart from the ones in the American army, who will face retaliation from equally nutty Afghans).

If they start throw Muslims into the pile of burning books, then there's a problem.

    Where is innocence clearly defined?
I know that Jews and Christians who worship golden calfs are targets for death from their fellow worshippers.

Book burning is always a sure road to peaceful reconciliation.
Surely it's his duty as a Christian to forgive these people (a point I'm sure has been made already), what an absolute wally.

totally agree.. this thing smells to high heaven.

Just guessing here - are there covert Islamists working in the media , sniffing out such stories and then using the gullible western media to hype their cause? Or maybe on the other hand hardline neo-cons pushing for a fight with Iran and this also serves their clash of civilisations cause.

The story is just so overblown (the guy only has 50 members in his church) that that far out theory might have a grain of salt of truth in it.

I hope the fallout from the Koran burning stunt will be an exponential escalation of tit-for-tat religious book burnings. As an unaffiliated party, I am nonetheless willing to assist any party in their reprisals, for a small fee.

I agree. I wish people would stop saying its a minority etc when it comes to this Bible burning/Koran etc. Its simply not. The amount of people who would have no problem with this at all, it is just not a minority.

There are more than 50 idiots in America (I will also point out that there are more than 50 idiots in Ireland before the Americans start whining).

The media coverage of this only served to garner more support for this eejit.

"(Reuters) - A church in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur was firebombed early on Friday, gutting the first storey of the building in a residential area, amid a row over the use of the word "Allah" for the Christian God."

or when two churches in Indonesia were burned down earlier this year
" Jakarta (AsiaNews) - A crowd of at least 1000 people burned down two Protestant churches last night in Sibuhuan (district of Padang Lawas, North Sumatra). The blaze was the culmination of tension between the faithful and the local Islamic community, tired of seeing " too many faithful and too many prayers " in a place not registered as a church. "

It's because those events happened in Malaysia and Indonesia. No one apart from those who live there is going to care. It's like when France banned burqa's it made headlines whereas if Chile were to ban them it'd barely be mentioned.

Probably said before, but how about we turn it into a week-long thing. Burn a different holy book each day of the week. The Koran on Saturday; the Bible on Sunday (bonus points for the Sabbath); the Vedas gets it on Monday; then the Torah on Tuesday etc.

Oh, and free ice-cream for everyone who's book is getting burnt on the day. Everyone gets to be offended but there's ice-cream, so no wars. Yay for equality!
