Dip student takes them from the beginning.

IN Galway anyways, there's a 2 week TP induction period where you have the option of taking a few of your timetabled classes in week 1, some more in week 2 and then by week 3 you take all your timetables classes.

I think I'm just going to go for it regardless, better to start fresh with the classes and just dive straight in. You only learn by doing!

    Hey guys and gals!

First off, congrats to everyone who managed to get a place for next year :-D!
I got a place in UCC myself for English and History. Currently doing a Masters in English so it's going to be a long summer!

How's everyone doing with regards to getting placement? I was reading through a lot of the comments and thee's a bit of a mixed reaction. I'm from Cork myself and have applied to the majority of schools in East and central Cork. So far only two have replied to me and that was to say they were full! I dunno if i've gone about things the wrong way? I've just been sending emails with a CV and cover letter attached to it. I think tomorrow i'm going to have to start making some phone calls, especially if I still haven't heard anything back. What was everyone else's approach?

Tried my old school as well but i'd trust the principal about as far as i could throw him as he is an absolute snake!!

    Cheers folks!

    Hi Henno,

I got Cork too and sorted out my school on Thursday. As I don't know Cork - and having one of my friends scaring me about applying for placements straight away - I think I emailed my CV and cover letter to around 15 places that weekend of getting the offer. I have to say I was a bit overwhelmed with how many got back to me by the Monday and Tuesday. Quiet a lot of them wanted to meet me. But as you are from Cork this shouldn't be a problem for you, perhaps call into some schools you have in mind?

There are places - I just think they're being bombarded at the moment with everyone and the orals are starting this week too.

    Best of Luck :)

    Thanks for the reply Boomtown.

About an hour after I posted this I managed to get two offers, with one of them being my old secondary school so i'm going to take up the option to go there. Fair play for getting all the replies though.

Which school did you opt for in the end? :-)

You're taking the offer from your old school even though the principal is a "snake"? Hopefully you'll have better luck with the guy this time round :D

    Hi Guys,

I got an offer to do my PDE. I have accepted it and looking forward to starting in september. My subjects are English and Geography. The only problem is I don't have the 15ects in Human Geography to teach Geography. I mainly did physical modules during my degree. I never knew that you needed 15ects in Human in order teach Geography! Is anyone or has anyone been in a similar situation? Is there any way around it?

Hey MontyChips, i too will be doing Geography, what do you mean by 15ects? and where did you find out this info?? cheers

    John

    Hey John,
You have to teach at least 4 and a half hours a week, and no more than eight. You must have five classes in your first subject and at least two class periods for your second subject... You meet with your principal and discuss this info with them, and then when decided on the timetable, you fill it out plus your teaching practice form and e-mail back to UCD.

    Hi All,

Thanks to Pulp_fishin for asking a question I've been meaning to ask.

I am doing the PDE in NUIG this year, how may hours of TP must you do per week.

Is it the same number for both your subjects or x hours for subject 1 and y hours for subject 2?

    Thanks, Compgeek.

    Hi All,

Thanks to Pulp_fishin for asking a question I've been meaning to ask.

I am doing the PGDE in NUIG this year, how may hours of TP must you do per week.

Is it the same number for both your subjects or x hours for subject 1 and y hours for subject 2?

    Thanks, Compgeek.

110 hours timetabled over 16 weeks. It's up to you/the school what subjects you teach to make up them hours. They can all be in the one subject as far as the college are concerned.

It's the PDE, not PGDE by the way.

Thats not true for UCD anyway. I just found a link on the PAC status page. For Ucd PDE students you must teach 140 hours minimum across the school year. 4 and a half hours per week minimum- with at least 5 classes in your first special method subject and two classes in your second.

I presume it is when we get official forms from our University that we choose which is our first subject and which is our second?? as i am still undecided

I know it's not true for UCD. He asked about NUIG, which is what I told him. That's if it's the same as this year anyways.

Does anyone know re trinity when / if we will hear from them. I have received nothing but the.email to say I'd been accepted. I emailed to see if we would be gettin a formal acceptance letter but they said no, the one on the website is enough?

    Hi John

Each module you do in your degree is worth a certain amount of ECT's. Mine were usually worth 5ect's for each module. It said it on the teaching councils website that you needed 15ects (at least) in human geography in order to teach geography. I presume the same applies for physical. I only discovered this at the start of this semester, so unluckily I couldn't change modules. If I find the link I will send it to you!

    Hi everyone,

I've just sorted out my placement but I have a few concerns. I only have German as a teachable subject.

I'm not quite clear about taking two specialist subjects during the PDE year. Will I get a list of subjects like religion and CSPE to choose from? And the principal seemed to think I would just be teaching German, do I have to teach a second subject in the school such as CSPE (if I can get it)?

I rang up trinity the other day and they said that they will be sending out info about induction "soon". it was a very vague response but i would assume some sort of details will have to come our way.

It kinda depends on the school. It's recommended that you observe for about 2 weeks and then take over. My principal just threw us into it and some others did/do the same.

It's up to you. Personally I wanted to start straight away. The college gave us a two day induction in August and then off we went. If you wait you're making it very obvious that you're a student. Which is fine in a school with no discipline problem.

I presume you've sent emails and contacted schools. Did you hear anything back from them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 25 Irishcailin89

Ya I have sent out loads of emails, schools have emailed me back saying they can't facilitate me. I've had interviews, didn't pick me. I had one on wednesday so fingers crossed I hear back from them . It's really stressful!

It is very stressful. Could you maybe try calling in to some schools? When do you expect to be going to Canada?
