Currently studying a B. Ed (primary), and specialising in History. Have been led to believe that this enables me to teach secondary school teaching. Wondering if I was to choose this route, I would probably need another subject to teach, what my directions should be after my degree?

You need 60 credits of History including at least 10 from 3rd/4th year. You must also have covered certain topics specified by the TC. You would then need the PME second level. A second subject would be essential to be employable, especially with History being one of the most oversubscribed and not a core subject.

thanks for the reply, seems like it would cost a lot of time to go down that avenue

Hi thanks. It's just if I don't get a school sorted I want to be sure I don't have to go through the whole application procedure again

Let them know you can't get a school too. They are supposed to help you out. Do you have a list of all schools?

Anybody else not got a school yet? I literally only started applying this week and don't live anywhere near Dublin so can only apply by email ! please tell me there are others in the same boat???

Anyone know when student accommodation starts becoming available in Galway on sites like daft.ie etc..? Most places advertised are only for summer months and when I contact the landlord they say they need it rented out immediately. Don't know if I should leave it a few weeks or keep an eye out?

Would it be better financially to stay in b&bs while doing your dip? (Assuming you're doing your tp at home?)

Just wanted to say that that's what my friend did. She's doing her masters in social work and was only in Galway 3-4 days a week for 11 weeks so she rang around and got a good deal with a B&B instead.

Hey, what changes can we expect for earning a maths qualification in 2017?

I was planning on doing this as an additional subject as a I complete the Hibernia.

I'm assuming there won't be any major changes to the conditions?

Has anyone that's got accepted to trinity heard anything back from them about TP or Garda vetting havn't heard anything from them..Also I assume that we'll be in the same school for teaching practice on the Thursday and Friday of semester 1 as in the block placement in semester 2

    Hi,

I am currently studying PME Post Primary teaching with Hibernia College. My first subject is Business Studies which I will qualify to register with the teaching council. However, at the outset, Hibernia allowed us to pick up a secondary subject and I chose Geography. I have 10 months left on the course and I have been teaching Geography on teaching practice without any problem. Will I be registered in Geography with the teaching council? If I can't, will it affect my chances of getting a job if I am just registered in one subject but have the two on my masters?

    Thanks

You won't be able to register for Geography unless you have at least 60 degree credits and fulfil the requirements set out on page 2 of this document:

    https://www.google.ie/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=3&rct=j&q=teaching%20council%20subject%20requirement%20geography&ved=0ahUKEwj93KmonaLNAhUMK8AKHZodD8oQFggfMAI&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.teachingcouncil.ie%2Fen%2F_fileupload%2FSubject-Declaration-Forms-Updated-December%2FGeography-Form-REVISED-.pdf&usg=AFQjCNFfSovfAeh6GU5x4WxCohVadCEOiQ

Having the subject methodology in your masters but not being registered won't affect getting a job but having only a single teaching subject will - especially with Business being so oversubscribed.

    Thanks.

I wonder would it be possible to teach Business & Geography if hired by a school even though I'm just registered in one? Would it have any affect on the pay rate?

Otherwise, do I have to do a four year course (level 8) to gain the credits or is it possible to do some modules in order to get the credits for Geography?

You could teach Geography if hired by a school - you could teach Ancient Greek if they wanted you to. It's up to the principal once you are already working. But your main problem would be getting hired in the first place, and there's no shortage of Geography teachers - it's a common second subject - so chances of them needing to use an unqualified teacher in that area are slim. I'm unsure about the pay rate - it would depend on your contract type I think. Certainty some ETBs pay the unqualified rate to non-permanent teachers teaching outside their registered subjects. Permanent staff must be paid their salary regardless. It may depend on the ETB or individual voluntary school though.

You would not need a degree to register though, you could just do enough modules to get sufficient credits and satisfy the content required by the TC.

It depends on the company - it's really not the teacher that gets them - it's the school. I think they give online access though. You can ring and find out.

When I did my dip, I used the teacher's books. You might be able to get one from the school book scheme if there is a spare one.

    <Mod snip> <as per charter> <cheers>

Those who have accepted a place in Galway, have you heard anything from the college since? I've met the deadlines for sending off vetting forms, final year grades etc but haven't gotten any update as of yet.

Your best bet is not to mention that you are a doing teaching practice and when you email just say you are a teacher in the school, give the roll number, state the book you would like as a sample and hopefully they will send you one. Reps can Be reluctant to give books to student teachers and I know even with our school we can struggle to get books for each teacher in the department as they are merely "samples". It is nice to be able to build up a resource of books but you will find that you always revert back to the book you think is the best. What subjects do you teach? If it is Irish and/or History I can let you know the books I feel are the best at the moment and you could start there (as well as the textbook used in the school)

Discovering history (mentor) is, in my opinion, the best book out at the moment though the past today seems to be most commonly used. Mentor have another great book out revision and resources I think it is called it us from the same author as discovering history but it has great activities as well as a comprehensive revision section. We use the past today so it's nice to have a different textbook for a bank of resources.

Sadly, both those books mentioned are outside the reading capabilities of many children. You can't beat making up your own resources.

Well yeah that is true, but as a teacher they are great for course detail and information and then notes can be made from that.

Never understood why they insist on making JC textbooks that require such a high reading age. It probably explains some of the very confused answers you see while correcting.
