    Two pedestrians killed on motorway

The men were hit by a heavy goods vehicle on the northbound M6 between junctions 17 and 18.

Police said the HGV's 60-year-old driver, from Selby, North Yorkshire, had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Officers urged witnesses to the crash or the driving before it to get in touch.

The crash happened near Sandbach, north of Stoke-on-Trent.

Road signs were set across the region to advise drivers of the closure and delays in the area.

An empty car was parked on the hard shoulder at the scene.

Officers are trying to establish if it belonged to the victims, who might have broken down and tried to cross the carriageway, or might have been struck as they were emerging from the car.

"It is too early to tell," a police spokesman said.

Why should the hgv driver be charged with dangerous driving. I thought it was illegal to walk on a motorway...

Sadly it's only a matter of time before something like this happens here as the standard of motorway driving in Ireland is atrocious.

Amount of people who think that the hard shoulder is a general purpose stopping area for making phone calls, eating sandwiches, going to toilet etc is unbelieveable. Then when finished they rejoin the motorway in 1st gear at 25kph! Only in Ireland!

Moved from the Roads forum (which is about the roads themselves, rather than driver behaviour).
