Finding ships and ports...

Good evening...
I'm wondering where I would look for ships that left for the US and from which port.... I'm completely new to finding this information, and have no clue where to start looking... I've no idea what year- all I know is that it was before 1957.... Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated!
