I've seen it as well. They have a website that I checked out and it appears they also have a place in Ashbourne and do orders/deliveries - looks promising!

DO you have the web address ??

  • Registered Users Posts: 222 ✭✭Blizzard

    It's www.nicksfish.ie
Do you know when it's opening? It should be soon as it looks like they've been working on it and their sign is up over the door.

They will have to compete with the 2 already in the town. One in the transit van in whitewater/old lidl carpark. We go to him most fridays and he is very good, and very willing to give cooking advice. The second one took his old place beside the topaz. Never been to him.

Fishmonger needs to be good price, fresh produce, and most importantly good advice for cooking. Very few know what to do with a fish, including me. So far, I get all three from guy in old Lidl carpark.

I thought they where only there on fridays ?
The guy beside the topaz doesnt have huge variety, just the usual cod, haddock.
hope Nicks has a good selection, looked at the website and his shop in ashbourne has a lobster tank, hope we get one too :pac:

Seems the Nicksfish guy is in business for 26 years, and the family are in the business for over 100 years - so I reckon he has a little bit of knowledge at this stage.:D

Nice to see you can get fish, meat & fruit/veg altogether within 50 metres. - Now if only bradburys or another baker would move into the same row of shops and it'll be perfect.

Anyone able to compare as of yet what the prices are to the other mongers and the supermarket chains?
Be good of them to start up an email/text club for offers or a Facebook page :D.
We all know fish can vary alot on season and on demand.

I have been to both vans and now to new shop and there is No comparison , new fishmongers is light years ahead and they even have a toilet and hand wash facility .

A smashing shop and we deserve it . thank god no need to go to a van in a car park or filling station

I find the guys who sell fish from a van are usually very good as the product is fresh from the market that day.

A specialist fishmonger will naturally be better especailly as the nicks fish operators have over 100 years of family history behind them and have their own processing facility in ashbourne.

My guess is the guys in the vans will be cheaper as their cost base is lower, but all in all a great choice in Newbridge for fish lovers.

suprisingly the fish shop is cheaper ( and certainly fresher ) than the van in the car park or the one in the filling station , im now almost embarased to admit i ever bought fish from a filling station or a carpark .

    please dont leave me nicksfish

Went in for first time last Thursday, got a lump of cod, plaice fillet and squid rings, enough to feed 4 people very well. Total cost €13.40. At last a properly priced fish shop, wont have to go to Dublin anymore. Well done Nicks fish.

Finally got in to buy some fish today - and it was worth my wait! Delicious - got the special which was four fillets of sea bass for €10 and some jumbo prawns. Have to say I'm thrilled these guys are in town now. Have to admit to buying fish from the van man also and there is absolutely no comparison in the fish - Nick's is completely fresh (no smell off it at all, as it should be when fresh) and very easy to cook and tasted great! Definitely recommend this shop highly. Staff nice and friendly too.:)

Wife went in Friday and she thought it was very good. We got mussels (about 30) which we made mussels in white wine sauce (lovely). On Saturday, we used the tiger prawns (20 or thereabouts) for a stir fry. Total price about 7 quid for dinner for 2 on 2 nights. Great value and great produce.

I love the way the prawns and packaged. You buy the weight you require, or ask, they are put in to a labeled Nick's Fish bag and seal it. Weight and price are clearly labeled.

We are already planning our next purchase and actively looking for receipes.

Not a knowledgeable fish-eater, but went in yesterday to check it out.

Beautiful and clean, very helpful staff. Got two fine pieces of cod for myself and my 12 year-old for €6. We pan-fried them and ate them with my wife's superb home-made chips. Fantastic taste, the cod just crumbled on the fork. The young fella would have eaten all of it if I'd let him.

Will definitely go back and try something else. A major addition to food shopping in the town.
