Tribal tattoos

Lately I've been spending a lot of time looking at tattoos, researching the design I want etc. From doing all this I've gotten a sense that the "tattoo scene" seem to look down their nose at tribal tattoos.

Is there a certain stigma that is perceived to be associated with tribal tattoos?

Or have I just put 2 and 2 together and come up with 7.

I think it's cos tribal tattoos were very trendy and common for a while, like nautical stars, Chinese symbols, Cheryl Cole hand tattoos, "tramp stamps" etc. There seems to be a new phase of tattoos every year that may be seen as a fashion as opposed to getting tattoos for the love of the art.

My first two tattoos were tribal-ish black tattoos. I think so long as adequate thought is put into whatever tattoo you want to get, and who you get to do it, you won't regret it. And who cares what those in the "tattoo scene" think so long as you like it. It's not on their bodies.

Dohnny, I've only black tribal (legs, arms, back) never had any hassle

My first is bascially a tribal design, not the black blobs you see about, but some quite detailed, (sim to the mauri stuff you see on NRL players I suppose)

OP - i'd agree with you yeah, from my own experience quite a lot of people would look down on tribal tattoos...i think they see them as uninventive or lazy

i dont mind tribal tattoos, apart from when its a knack strolling into a studio and flicking through a catalogue to find the "deadliest" one

John in Inkwell does a wide range of tribal styles, including polynesian. I had one done this summer (see 'I'll show you mine' sticky). He designs freehand onto skin. Does great work, wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

And to respond to thread title, I couldn't care less what people think of my tattoo, I love it.

They are examples of what I kinda like. I like em really "busy".

Only thing is I'm not as ripped as the guy in the second pic (i'd be a bit more than the guy in the first).

But I'm also Irish, so i'm white white white.

So not sure if they suit.


on another note, isnt it **** when you go looking at tattoo designs and the guys are like body builders. Its hard to see if those tat;s would suit more normal people:P

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm built like a hobbit who's eaten all the pies with milkbottle skin. It just looks different is all. Friend of mine would love a tattoo but wants to get 'ripped' first. :rolleyes:sigh:rolleyes:

The tattoo will look good once it's designed to your body type, that second tattoo is on The Rock do there is no need to be worry worried about being ripped

Actually polyonesian tattoo's generally have meanings more so than the ****e miami ink put out.

I have tribal flames, a biohazzard symbol, an ace of spades being pierced by a sword, a lotus,a dream catcher and a love heart. Which have no meanings.

All tattoo's look rough and give off a bad vibe to narrow minded dolts.

Tribal, especially maori or poly- tattoos have probably the most meaning and history than all other forms combined.

Have to agree. Tribal tattoos are really symbolic and have deep meaning. Most are based around the 'Koru' spiral shape from the native New Zealand silver fern frond symbolizing new life, growth, strength and peace. Anyone saying otherwise hasn't got a clue.

I'm gathering ideas at the moment for a Ta Moko (Maori for traditional tattoo) half sleeve. Living in Auckland at the past year and going big on my first tattoo. Hopefully going to see a renowned artist in Auckland called Inia for a chat and see what he thinks.
