Aww... I'm stuck with a Q600 at stock. Only getting 3.5k at the moment (damn 670xs).

An i7 would be an awesome upgrade though; planning to go -bigadv?

The Q6600 is a great overclocker if you can deal with the heat. I had to buy a Noctua NH D14 to keep the temps below 60c on full load, worth it though :D

Yeah, definitely will use bigadv when I get the i7, used to run a bigadv on an i7 server that was doing nothing for a while and the points I used to get were crazy :pac: I hope to run the i7 at 4Ghz all going well. I'm hoping to order the parts at the end of January once my exams are over :D

What do you think I should do?

Ahh... the old "Screw you and your ATi fanboyism" error.

Ok... go to C> Users> Your Users> AppData (this is a hidden folder)> Roaming> Foldng@home-gpu. Make a shortcut of the .exe file (put it in your startup folder, the Desktop, wherever).

Rightclick the shortcut, and choose "Properties". At the end of the "Target" field, add a space, and -forcegpu ati_r800. If that doesn't work, try -forcegpu ati_r700. ;)

I can just imagine the coders for F@H having nVidia stickers plastered over their rigs :D

mind you, i've never touched ATI/AMD and don't intend to either :D

Might change soon; the new core will most likely favour AMD for a little bit, until things settle down.

I can only get this far( C> Users> Your Users) cant see appdata there

I know a lad who got F@H to run on a bunch of computers that are always left on in some unknown college around the place :)

I'm not sure how many are running or if they are scheduled to start at a certain time like after 7pm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

How'd he get permission for that?

    He didn't ;)

Ah, well, that's against the ToS of Folding@Home and not something I'd support.

They're only left idle anyway, might as well be doing something. Tis no like he's running his own porn & malware site off them. come to think of it I might update the clients on those things

Perhaps not, but it does increase CPU usage , and hence power consumption. And it's the principle that you're both using something that isn't yours to use, and going against the wishes of the Project.

it does, since installing the SMP client my desktop uses a full 22-25W more with the thing running

at least it will be warm for the students in the morning when they get in.

Gah, just found out the ICT labs at Trinity have got new computers, all with i7 860s with HT.

What I wouldn't give to get them Folding....

The really should be, the dept loves it research, in the name of science like, and a huge power bill:rolleyes:

Started folding for the sake of it really, wont get anywhere. Using a 2GhzDual and a 5770 HAWK. The 5770 can be OC'd a good bit, its only tipping 48* with the current fan scheme, so I could pump it a bit more.

Dont really think its worth using the old pentium boxes sitting under the desk inside.

I have two 8800s (GTX and GTS) that could be used if I can scavenge a box to house them. No nothing about folding but running 24/7 those heatbeasts could probably do some small amount of damage at least.

Just looking now, this box with the GPU going is using circa 50% CPU for the FAH Process. Is that normal? Can I reduce it(I only need the GPU every now and then, but I work the CPU fairly hard).

    Thanks,
    Lethal.

We could so use them for the CC right now to get into first too... doubt they let anyone near them 'cause of the exams though. :(

What client? v7 would be the best for your GPU, since it allows access to the new Core16 WUs for 5/6 series AMD GPUs.

Probably not worth it (at least not until there are bonuses on Unicore WUs).

~6k for the GTX. What GTS is it? 320/640mb would get different PPD to the 512mb version.

Well, if you switch to v7, each AMD GPU will take up aroung 1 core. No way around that really. :(
    Thanks,
    Lethal.

    Welcome. ;)

In TCD atm so I cant check my client. I installed GPU2, thats all I remember. Had to set the flag for 5 series as well.

    IIRC its a 320MB :(

Yeah, the dept are lazy gits, wont bother. Most people use their own laptops and the ICT huts are mostly empty(The two other labs are used) with all the boxes on and idling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭zodac

Aye, that's the old client. Get rid of GPU2, and instead follow this guide:
    http://www.overclock.net/folding-home-guides-tutorials/977412-windows-7-complete-client-v7-guide.html

Choose GPU for Preferred mode in the first post, then go follow post #4 as well. The new WUs will give double the PPD (though still eat up a CPU core).

Will there ever be a linux GPU client?

    Will do that now.

Just checked my stats, one WU on one client...hmmm, somethings not working.

Update: Will have a PS3 running most of the time from some time next week all things going to plan:)
