I'm still slightly amazed that this massive, OTT bridge got approved in the first place.

I'm delighted and can't wait to drive it!

Yea, it's scaled like something they'd do in China.
Previously on thread people were saying that the 1990s-era previous bypass of New Ross which didn't involve a bridge was done on the cheap. Well, it certainly was compared to this!

The shot taken from the river bank makes the structure look particularly impressive.

Took a detour enroute to Waterford the other day to look at the bridge. Seriously impressive and bigger than I thought it would be. Would love if you could walk across it before it opens.

Looks like a great project, reminds me of the Foyle Bridge in Derry.

I wonder if you were working on the bridge from day1 would you be really excited seeing it coming to a conclusion and all the sections meeting up?

Or would it just be another day's work for the construction crew?

I think I'd be bursting with pride at being part of something historic like that.

Do they know it'll meet edge to edge and perpendiculaur? :D

I’d say they’re excited by it, I remember seeing footage of the tunnelling crews meeting each other under the Channel Tunnel and how thrilled they were.

Yes, but the cultural gap they closed with the Channel Tunnel is nothing compared with this bridge.
They're practically another species over there.

That looks as if one crane is left and only one gap remains. That is very close to fully joined up.

Although there's probably not going to be a notable increase in trade between Ruane and Carrigcloney, the completion of the bridge will bring the communities either side of the river closer than they have been for a hundred years.
Back in the 1800s, there was a lot of socialising and inter marrying between families near the Barrow, even though they would have been separated by 10 miles of bad road.
Many families had a cot or access to one, so it was as easy to row across the river as it was to travel on the boreens of the time.
The cots would have been used on the river up until around the 1960s I think, helping to rescue the poor tired salmon from the frigid waters.
My father's family migrated from one side to the other when he was 10, all transporting done across the river.

Fair play that is quite interesting to know. I think we take it for granted how easy it is for us to get around yet we all seem much further away from each other as we ever have been.

The irony is that it's really a Wex/Wat bridge.

When it opens they'll be traffic jams at the junctions but New Ross will be quiet.

Have Waterford nicked a bit of Kilkenny?
I hope it's a bit with some good hurlers innit

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

The traffic will be much more Waterford based than Kilkenny is what I meant.

The attempted land grab to bring administrative coherence to Waterford City and environs failed unfortunately.
